Introduction and material and methods

Over a one-year period, we performed 32 conventional computed tomography (CT) studies involving the intravenous administration of a contrast material that is cleared by the biliary system (Bilisergol), in patients in presenting clinical or radiological features of choledocholithiasis. The results were compared with the findings from endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and/or surgery.

Results

The sensitivity and specificity of intravenous cholangiography with conventional CT was 92%.

Conclusions

We demonstrate the utility of this widely available study, when performed according to protocol during apnea, with acquisition of thin sections. It is a highly sensitive and specific tool in the diagnosis of choledocholithiasis.
