Summary

—The use of magnetic fields for therapeutic purposes has been studied, above all in relationship with their effect on the stimulation of osteogenesis. There are double blind controlled studies in which their effect to stimulate bone formation in delayed consolidation of tibial fractures has been demonstrated.

Two clinical cases of patients who have suffered long bone fractures with delay in consolidation 8 months after surgical treatment are presented. 36 and 28 sessions of magnetotherapy were performed respectively for 30 minutes daily at a frequency of 50 Hz and intensity of 80 Gauss. In posterior controls, the consolidation of both fractures was confirmed radiologically.

The articles published that assess the results of treatment with pulsating magnetic fields in longer series of patients affected by delayed consolidation and pseudoarthrosis are commented on and a short explanation on its biological effect and the possible harmful effects is provided.
