In the preoperative chest X-ray for carotid endarterectomy (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>A) masses were observed in the lower right and upper left lung lobes that were not visible in the radiograph taken 6 months earlier (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>B). The patient had suffered a respiratory tract infection 2 months prior, but was currently asymptomatic. A physical examination was unremarkable, and PCR for COVID-19 was negative. We decided to postpone surgery until the study had been completed, and after consulting with the Pulmonology department, a chest CT was requested (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>C) that showed an “atoll sign” area of consolidation in the right lower lobe that was highly indicative of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia.
