Traditional journals that pay by subscription are joined by hybrid models with open articles after payment of royalties by the authors; open access journals or the golden route that require payment to publish after peer review; publications in institutional repositories or the green route that allows inclusion of databases and articles prior to their review or after a review prior to their edited version, together with the diamond or platinum route that allows the publication of works free of charge for the authors whilst maintaining their copyright. Obviously, the latter are scarce, since their sustainability is difficult without the financial contribution of public or non-profit institutions. Our journal belongs to the first group and we are subject to contracts with Elsevier that have a two-year article embargo. This limits the dissemination and citation of works if researchers do not have access to them through subscriptions from their institutions. It must be remembered that the publication of works that have received public funds or institutional competitive grants have the obligation that their work be published openly and registered in institutional repositories of the green route within six months after publication. To this highly competitive environment, predatory open access journals should be added. These offer authors quick and easy publications of their works through email, with dubious peer review in exchange for high sums for their publication. Likewise, there are also fraudulent journals that acquire similar addresses and web page interfaces that are very similar to those of the journals they are trying to impersonate, and this should increase the caution of authors when they try to charge them for publishing.1–3

Large anaesthesiology journals have begun to adapt to these new times by creating new associated open digital journals to provide an outlet for the large number of papers they receive and, of which more than 95% are rejected for not having editorial space to publish such high demand. Examples of this are the BJA Open Access and EJA Open Access, which are less limited in publishing articles per issue. Competition continues to grow not only for new open journals, but also for emerging country journals that publish openly without charging authors, using the funds of their institutions and that have also recently obtained the Impact Factor.3

All of this makes the Impact Factor so necessary for our journal in recent decades, once obtained, a starting point in the global race to obtain the best papers, which not only achieve the greatest number of external citations in other journals but also have a great impact on readings, downloads and dissemination on social networks. In recent years, new indicators have been proposed that will make the evaluation system more complex and sophisticated, so as not to depend on self-citations by authors in other journals or internal citation within this one.

Our objectives in this new period are: to increase scientific rigour, threatened by fraud and misuse of artificial intelligence,12 fostering the presentation of high-quality original works, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, as well as disseminating the clinical practice guidelines of our sections. Clinical cases would be published only in exceptional circumstances. We must improve review times, to obtain first reviews within two to three weeks maximum time, with quick responses to the authors. Authors must also respond to reviewers as soon as possible. Editing times by the publisher must be reduced and facilitate access to supplementary content on the Internet, as well as the possibility that the most impressive works of each issue can be awarded scholarships to be published openly. We must also reduce the time between the acceptance of the papers and their final publication because at the moment this is very high, due to the large number of papers accepted from the previous stage coinciding with the pandemic, which will lead to increasing the rate of rejection. To achieve our goals, we must facilitate training for reviewers from our foundation and provide opportunities to new national and international reviewers. The published papers should also be disseminated in advance or in their regular issue, using all the social networks most used by anaesthesiologists. Here we are counting on a team that has been working for several months to highlight the value of the papers, increase their dissemination and invite readership.

From Sociedad Española de Anestesiología, Reanimación y Terapéutica del Dolor (SEDAR), a major budgetary effort has been made for more than a decade with our scientific publication.
