Introduction

There is growing interest among practitioners in our specialty in the use of instruments to assess health status for outcome evaluation. The essence of the physician's task is to evaluate the patient's discomfort, identify problems that threaten their well-being (establish a diagnosis), recommend actions that help to restore health (establish the indication), and execute these actions.

State of the art

We assessed the state of the art after a review of the literature.

Conclusions

Specific spinal column function is measured best using the Roland and Morris questionnaires, and the Oswestry disability index. SF-36 is the most useful instrument for evaluating overall health and chronic pain. Occupational status can be assessed with the SF-36 or more specific scales like WL-26. Finally, the PSS is useful for assessing patient satisfaction.
