Terminología académica en urología y riesgos profesionales:aviso a responsables

En la pasada reunión de la Academia Europeade Urología, cuyos objetivos formativos y profesionalesson muy variados, en presencia delSecretario General de la Asociación Europea deUrología el Profesor Abrahamsson, volvió a suscitarseel riesgo que puede tener para nuestraespecialidad el uso, académicamente correcto, dedos especialidades profesionales de manera conjuntao emparejada.

The European Academy of Urology has a number of professional and educational objectives. During its last meeting, and in front of its General Secretary Prof.Abrahamsson, the risk of the joint use of names of two medical specialities was addressed. It being otherwise academically correct, one of the first examples is the term uro-gynecology excessively used during the early seventies. It was also proposed the term geriatric urology; fortunately it only succeeded in very limited professional circles. But the reason for discussion during the recent meeting of the Academy was the term oncologic urology or uro-oncology. It must be underlined that there are no reasons from the academic point of view to reject such combination of terms. Nevertheless, some criticisms can arise from the professional point of view; there can be potentially negative effects for the urology, and certain urological aspects could be segregated in favour of other specialties. Among others, the term pediatric urology was also mentioned; fortunately an acceptable solution to this professional scenario has been reached in many countries.
