Myopia and retinal striae induced by topiramate

Abstract

Clinical case

A 23-year-old woman who was seen due to decreasing far visual acuity 24hours after starting treatment with topiramate. In the cycloplegic refraction, RE showed –4.25 and LE –4.50. Retinal striae could be seen in the macula of both eyes. The alterations ceased 48 hours after the drug treatment was interrupted.

Discussion

Drug induced acute myopia is an infrequent phenomenon, the aetiology of which is still not fully known.

Mujer de 23 años que acudió por disminución de agudeza visual a las 24 horas de iniciar un tratamiento con topiramato. En la refracción con cicloplejía presentaba en el OD –4,25 y en el OI –4,50. En el fondo de ojo se apreciaban estrías retinianas en la mácula de ambos ojos. Las alteraciones desaparecieron a las 48 horas de suspender el fármaco.

Discusión

La miopía aguda inducida por fármacos es un fenómeno infrecuente de etiología poco conocida.
