AbstractIntroduction: The mid gut is the portion of the digestive tract that lies between the ligament of Treitz and the ileocecal valve. It can only be assessed by videocapsule endoscopy and enteroscopy. Balloon enteroscopy-assisted techniques are the most commonly used worldwide. There are several studies comparing single versus double-balloon enteroscopy noting that the results can be contradictory.
Objective: The aim of the current study was to compare single vs. double-balloon enteroscopy regarding the depth of maximal insertion and the procedure time with both techniques.
Results: A retrospective, single center study, that include all patients who underwent single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) and double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) between July 2009 and July 2012 in the Department of Endoscopy, Specialities Hospital National Medical Center 21th Century, Mexican Institute of Social Security, Mexico City. We include a total of 98 enteroscopies, 47 studies with SBE and 51 with DBE. The average procedure time was 92.5minutes with SBE and 86.15minutes with DBE (P=0.193). The mean depth of maximal insertion were 185.63cm and 202.45cm respectively (P=0.378). No adverse events were recorded.
Conclusion: Both techniques proved to be safe and equally effective for the study of the mid gut.
