Hemoglobin is a hemoprotein composed of four different polypeptide globin chains and contains about 141–146 amino acids.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0060"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> Hemoglobin is a substance in red blood cells that is useful for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0065"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3,4</span></a></p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Pregnancy is a mother’ condition whose hemoglobin level is under 11<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>g% in the first and third trimesters, or a hemoglobin level of less than 10.5<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>g% in the second trimester.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0075"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a></p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Seaweed is a subtle-shaped low-level plant from the Thalophyta division (leafless body structure). In general, seaweed lives at sea depths that can still be reached by sunlight. These seaweeds generally live as fitobenthos, which attach themselves to the substrate of mud, sand, shells, dead coral fragments, rocks, wood and other hard objects. Some are attached to other plants specifically.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0080"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6,7</span></a></p><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Data from Batua Public Health Centre of Makassar (2017) from January to December 2017, there are 2675 pregnant women who checked their pregnancies, and there are104 pregnant women (3.88%) who experienced anemia. Based on data from January to November 2018, there were 2560 pregnant women who had their pregnancy checked and 126 pregnant women with mild anemia (4.92%) (Batua Public Health Centre of Makassar data, 2018).</p></span><span id="sec0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0040">Methods</span><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This type of research used quasi-experimental by applying one group pre and post-test design. The intervention carried out by pregnant women was to give seaweed spirulina capsules, 1 capsule containing 300<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>mg, 1 capsule once a day for 30 days, so that the number of spirulina capsules needed for 1 sample was 30 seaweed capsules. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling with a sample of 20 respondents in inclusion criteria, namely pregnant women with Hb anemia <11<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>g%, not taking other drugs, and pregnant women without complications, and mothers who were ready to be respondents.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0085"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a> This research was conducted from February to May 2019, bivariate analysis was carried out by using the <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">T</span> test (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">T</span> paired).</p></span><span id="sec0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0045">Result</span><span id="sec0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0050">Respondents’ characteristics analysis</span><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Based on anemia from 20 respondents as sample, the highest number of maternal anemia was 18 respondents (90%) and there were 2 moderate respondents (10%) in the lowest anemia. Based on the Hb before, from 20 respondents there were10 Hb levels as many as 14 respondents (70%), 9 Hb levels as many as 4 respondents (20%), and 7 Hb levels as many as 2 respondents (10%). Based on the Hb level after 20 respondents, there were Hb level before from 20 respondents there were 10 Hb levels as many as 14 respondents (70%), 4 respondents (20%) who had 9 Hb levels, and there were 2 respondents (10%) who had 7 Hb level.</p><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a> shows, before respondents were given seaweed capsules, the average was 9.8950 and after being given seaweed capsules the average was 11.7950. From the analysis by using the paired <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">t</span>-test obtained <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span> value was 0.000. This value is less than 0.05 (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span><<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span><span class="elsevierStyleItalic">α</span>), so that Ho was rejected. Ha was accepted, it means that there is an effect of seaweed capsule consumption on hemoglobin levels of anemic pregnant women.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia></span></span><span id="sec0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0055">Discussion</span><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">From the results of this study, there were 19 respondents there is an increase in hemoglobin levels after being given seaweed capsules, seaweed contains vitamins such as vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, E, and K, beta-carotene, and minerals, such as potassium, phosphorus, sodium, iron, and iodine. Some types of seaweed contained more important vitamins and minerals, such as potassium and iron when compared to vegetables and fruits.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0090"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a></p><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">One respondent whose Hb level increase was no more increase like other respondents and still experienced anemia, because mother was not consuming enough iron, it is not available the needs of pregnant women. Iron deficiency in pregnancy can cause interference with pregnancy.</p><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This study conformity with previous research conducted by Rahmi et al. (2018) concerning with the effectiveness of seaweed consumption to increase hemoglobin levels for anemic pregnant women, <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p-</span>value <0.0001 (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span><<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0.05) with changing the mean before being given 8.94<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>g. It became 10.72<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>g after it was given and increment increase in Hb for pregnant women was 1.78<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>g.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0085"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a></p><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In addition, study is being carried out by Yuniarti et al. (2016), the effect of giving seaweed <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Sargassum</span> sp on serum hemoglobin and ferritin levels, the results of iron levels in <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Sargassum</span> sp used in this study were 122.37<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>mg/g with lead content 0.00009%. The increase of hemoglobin levels after giving seaweed <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Sargassum</span> sp to the treatment group was 5.24<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>g/dl (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span><<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0.05). The increase of serum ferritin levels in the treatment group was 4.20<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>μg/ml (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0.05).<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0095"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">9</span></a></p><p id="par0065" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The next factor that can affect hemoglobin was work, types of work that are informal or private require relatively heavier physical activity which can drain more energy. This process has the effect of releasing iron during activities, where pregnant and lactating women who carry out a larger workload need food and nutritional intake. to maintain a healthy body condition and meet its energy needs.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0100"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a></p><p id="par0070" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In this study, there were 18 respondents (90%), most of the pregnant women who became respondents were housewives. According to the researchers’ assumption, in this study from 20 samples of anemia pregnant women who consumed seaweed capsules, their Hb levels were not anemic. There are 5% of respondents whose Hb levels do not increase and still experience anemia due to lack of rest or the mother experiencing insomnia, apparently not in accordance with the conditions of pregnant women Iron deficiency in pregnancy can cause interference with pregnancy.</p></span><span id="sec0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0060">Conclusion</span><p id="par0075" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This research shows that from 20 respondents as sample of anemia pregnant women who consume seaweed capsules experience an increase in their Hb levels, they do not get anemia. There is 1 respondent whose Hb level increase did not increase more like other respondents and still experiences anemia, because she does not consume enough iron, it was not in accordance with the conditions of pregnant women.
