Colombian research in psychiatry in the Latin American context

According to the portal SCImago Journal & Country Rank, in 2021 Colombia was, for the first time ever, ranked third in Latin America for the production of articles in the field of "Psychiatry and mental health". This time we even overtook Chile, having overtaken Argentina the previous year when we were ranked fourth. Our scientific production in 2021, with a total of 296 documents, brings us close to the region's second-ranked country, Mexico, with a total of 356 documents. Brazil, which, during this quarter of a century in which SCImago has been keeping a record of scientific production,1 has always been ranked first, published 1,242 documents, which is more than the next 5 countries put together. In order, these countries were Mexico, Colombia, Chile (with 273) and Peru (with 90). The number of Colombian publications ranks our country 37th in the world, which is a major achievement if we consider that we were ranked 51st in 1996 and 56th in 1997. Brazil, which was ranked 21st in 1996 in the first ever ranking, has moved up the list to 16th in 2021, while Mexico has dropped from 23rd to 35th. Other countries that have slid down the world rankings are Argentina, which has dropped from 30th to 46th, Venezuela, which has dropped from 39th to 109th, and Cuba, which has dropped from 54th to 92nd. Although being ranked 37th in the world is very much an achievement, there is still room to improve. It must be noted that this ranking for psychiatry and mental health is higher than the ranking held by the country for all science disciplines (47th) or for all Medicine specialties (43rd). The addition of Revista Colombiana de Psiquiatría to the Scopus database as of 2013 has unquestionably been important for the publication of national scientific production and it is the duty of both the Journal2 and the Asociación Colombiana de Psiquiatría [Colombian Psychiatric Association] to try and consolidate Colombia's position as one of Latin America's three leading countries for the discipline.
