In the last 2 decades we have witnessed rapid developments in OCT. Time domain OCT (TD-OCT) was quickly replaced by spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) as it provided higher resolution1–3 and the option of 3-D visualization. As a result of said developments, the aim was to achieve visualization of the choroids structures. Swept-source OCT constitutes the latest landmark in the development of this device as it minimizes the dispersion produced by the pigment epithelium which prevents visualization of the innermost layers, exhibiting superior wavelengths as well as increased resolution and scan speed, thus enabling rapid acquisition of B-scans.1

UBM has a penetration of about 4mm in the ocular globe, with an approximate lateral and axial resolution of 50μm with the 50MHz transducer, which significantly exceeds conventional ultrasound which features a 10MHz transducer and a resolution of 300–400μm.1,2

Multiple papers have been published comparing the advantages and drawbacks of anterior segment TD-OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA) vs UBM (Sonomed, US)2 as well as of anterior segment 5-Line Raster SD-OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin,CA).3 The research carried out by Hau et al.,2 and Krema et al.3 reached the same conclusion about the use of these devices. UBM is superior to OCT in the visualization of the lateral surface of the lesion and of the complete tumor as well as in the definition of its posterior margin, which leads to better measurements of non-pigmented iris lesions. It also comprises a smaller number of optical artifacts which affect the tumor image. On the other hand, OCT is a no-contact technique providing higher resolution in tumors located in the anterior surface of the iris. OCT is a good alternative to UBM for following up nonpigmented iris tumors due to the limited capacity of OCT to penetrate pigmented tissue having a basis smaller than 2–3mm and an elevation thickness above 0.6–1.3mm.2,3

The above comments can be summarized by stating that UBM involves significant advantages for diagnosing and following up larger size pigmented or nonpigmented lesions located in the posterior area of the iris or in the ciliary body. Even though at present OCT devices can be found in most ophthalmology practices, they could be used as a first approach to diagnostic as well as for following up smaller anterior iris lesions.
" "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true "NotaPie" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "☆" "nota" => "
Please cite this article as: Rivero V.
