Previous research stated that professional nurses possess poor caring behaviour&#44; and according to academic advisers&#44; students pay less attention to the needs of patients and are less able to explain their condition thoroughly&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0105"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> One of the achievements of professional nurses is the daily practice of care for patients&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0110"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a></p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">A qualitative study through a focus group discussion &#40;FGD&#41; found peers as a contributing factor to the developing students caring behavior&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0115"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a> The interaction that occurs in peer groups is a form of peer&#39;s caring behaviour&#46; Peer&#39;s caring behaviours mentioned can help individuals in dealing with painful times and help instill a sense of caring in individuals&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4</span></a> Peers contribute to developing caring behaviour through the mentoring process and model&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> There is limited research related to this topic&#46; Based on those factors&#44; this study aimed to determine the relationship between peers and nursing students&#8217; caring behaviour towards patients&#46;</p></span><span id="sec0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0020">Method</span><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach used to obtain data from a total of 94 undergraduate nursing students in Jakarta and Depok selected using simple random sampling techniques&#46; In addition&#44; the Peer-Group Sampling Interaction Scale &#40;PGCIS&#41; and Caring Behaviour Inventory 24 &#40;CBI-24&#41; were used to measure the variables&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> PGCIS consists of 16 items&#44; divided into assistants and modelling subscales with questionnaires using 6 likert scales&#44; namely 1<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>strongly disagree&#44; 2<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>moderately disagree&#44; 3<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>slightly disagree&#44; 4<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>slightly agree&#44; 5<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>moderately agree&#44; and 6<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>strongly agree&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> Meanwhile&#44; CBI-24 consists of 24 items with four subscales&#44; namely respectful deference&#44; assurance of human presence&#44; positive connectedness&#44; and professional knowledge&#47;skills&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0130"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> It is measured using the following 6 likert scales 1<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>never&#44; 2<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>almost never&#44; 3<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>occasionally&#44; 4<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>usually&#44; 5<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>almost always&#44; and 6<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>always&#46;</p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Both measuring instruments passed the validity and reliability tests conducted before the data collection process&#46; The test results showed that the PGCIS gauge is reliable with a Cronbach&#39;s alpha value of 0&#46;87 after the removal of two invalid items&#44; namely &#8220;Students on this campus are too busy to help their classmates&#8221; and &#8220;There is a lot of competition among students on this campus&#46;&#8221; Meanwhile&#44; the validity and reliability test of the CBI-24 measuring instrument was declared valid and reliable on all items with Cronbach&#39;s alpha value of 0&#46;93&#46; Bivariate analysis data&#44; which was conducted by using the Pearson test&#44; analyzed the ethical principles such as respecting human dignity&#47;values&#44; privacy&#47;confidentiality&#44; fairness&#47;inclusiveness&#44; and taking into account the benefits as well as losses incurred&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0135"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a> The researcher has given informed consent guarantee protection of respondents&#8217; rights to privacy&#44; confidantiality&#44; justice&#44; and freedom from coercion before their participation in this research&#46; Also&#44; this research has participated in the process ethics test at the Ethic Committee Faculty of Nursing Universitas Indonesia with number&#58; SK-181&#47;UN2&#46;F12&#46;D1&#46;2&#46;1&#47;ETIK&#46;FIK&#46;2019&#46;</p></span><span id="sec0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0025">Results</span><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The demographic data of the study sample showed the characteristics of nursing students consist of age&#44; gender&#44; and origin of the programme&#46; Also&#44; <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a> shows that the average age of students is 23 &#40;21&#8211;39&#41; years old&#44; while <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0010">Table 2</a> shows that the majority and least respondents were regular female &#40;59&#46;6&#37;&#41; and male students &#40;6&#46;4&#37;&#41;&#44; respectively&#46; The total number of regular programme nursing undergraduate students &#40;66&#37;&#41; is greater than the extension &#40;34&#37;&#41;&#46; The regular students are the nursing undergraduate students that graduated from high school&#44; while the extension comprises of nursing diploma&#46;</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0010"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The results of data analysis on the variables of peer caring behaviour showed that the mean PGCIS score of students was 66 &#40;28&#44; 83&#41;&#44; and when converted into a percentage&#44; the value is 74&#46;3&#37;&#46; Therefore&#44; the students have good caring behaviour with a percentage close to 100&#37;&#46; The difference between the dimensions of modelling and mentoring showed insignificant results&#44; with a mean value of 32 &#40;16&#44; 42&#41;&#44; which was higher than the median mentoring dimension of 34 &#40;9&#44; 42&#41;&#44; as shown in <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0015">Table 3</a>&#46;</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0015"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The analysis of data showed that the CBI-24 had an average score of 5&#46;11<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#177;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;55&#46; Therefore nursing students showed a high caring behaviour towards patients because the results were close to the highest value of the total CBI24 score of 6 with a high average&#46; The positive connectedness was a CBI&#39;s dimension with the lowest mean score 4&#46;89<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#177;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;81 and the professional knowledge and skill was CBI&#39;s dimension with the highest mean score of 5&#46;29<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#177;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;59 &#40;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0020">Table 4</a>&#41;&#46;</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0020"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The results of the Pearson test showed a relationship between peers and nursing students&#8217; caring behaviour towards patients &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">p</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#60;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;001&#44; <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">&#945;</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;05&#41;&#46; The relationship was moderate &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">r</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;415&#41; and in a positive direction&#46; In addition&#44; the results also found that peer&#39;s caring behaviour contributed to 17&#46;2&#37; of student caring behaviour towards patients &#40;<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">r</span><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>&#61;<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0&#46;172&#41;&#44; as shown in <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0025">Table 5</a>&#46;</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0025"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0030">Discussion</span><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The analysis revealed that the peer&#39;s caring interaction among nursing students was in a good category&#46; In addition&#44; the dimension of providing assistants to nursing students was better than modelling&#44; with no significant difference&#46; Provision of assistance provided by other students can help reduce the academic burden of nursing internship students&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8&#44;9</span></a> Meanwhile&#44; the modelling dimension is meant to be willing to help and support other students&#44; accompanied by sensitivity in feeling the assistance needed by their friends&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a></p><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The results of this study also got that the nursing students showed good caring behaviour towards patients&#46; Caring behaviour is the expected behaviour of every nursing student because of the importance of caring in nursing&#46; Caring is essential and must be possessed by nurses to enable them to make the right decisions and assist patients&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a> A good caring behaviour has the ability to increase patient satisfaction with their services&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">11&#44;12</span></a></p><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The best caring behavioural dimension in this study was the professional knowledge and skill&#46; This is similar to the finding of Papastavrou et al&#46; studies&#44; which stated that this dimension is the best owned by respondents&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">11</span></a> This caused by nurses who have completed undergraduate programmes&#46; According to the latest nurses handbook&#44; graduates of nursing undergraduate programmes have an in-depth understanding of the field&#44; which are applied during the internship process&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0110"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> It consists of caritas processes which is intended by nurses to improve the quality of care and involve patients in the process so that a teaching-learning relationship occurs&#44; as well as mutual trust between nurse-patient&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0165"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">13</span></a> Clinical and caring decisions are influenced by the knowledge of science and technology with a commitment to the therapeutic relationship of nurses to patients&#44; thereby&#44; making knowledge a core wheel in nursing care&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0160"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">12</span></a></p><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The dimension of positive connectedness is the lowest mean score in this research and previous studies&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0155"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">11</span></a> In the positive connectedness dimension&#44; it contains an optimistic understanding&#44; relationship&#44; and readiness of prospective nurses in providing assistance to others&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0170"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">14&#44;15</span></a> The nurse-patient relationship is one of the important things in the nursing process created to ettend to patient&#39;s welfare&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0180"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">16</span></a> Nursing students are still in the learning phase&#44; for that reason&#44; their minimal experience tends to be the cause of the low dimensions of positive connectedness&#46; Therefore&#44; this is enhanced by observing nurses interacting with patients and implementing caring behaviours towards peers&#46; Students can also improve this dimension by interacting directly with patients&#44; in order to gain experience to deal directly with patients and gain patient confidence&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0115"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a></p><p id="par0065" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Based on the results of the bivariate analysis&#44; there is a relationship between the peers and nurses&#8217; caring behaviour of patients&#46; The positive correlation means that the better the caring behaviour of peers&#44; the better the caring behaviour of the nursing students&#46; Interaction between students on campus and clinical practice become part of developing caring behaviour&#46; Previous research stated that peers are the first people that students interact when on campus&#46; Therefore&#44; they play an important contribution to cultivating the caring behaviour of nursing students&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0115"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a> They also ranked the second contributing person on the development of nursing students&#8217; caring behaviour for parents&#46; Over time&#44; relationships between students get better and students get to know and support each other&#46; This support involves providing assistance and feedback when needed&#44; helps to solve problems&#44; and also as an exercise to gain caring experience from various dimensions&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0120"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4</span></a> It can be trained as long as students are in clinical practice&#46;</p><p id="par0070" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Clinical practice is part of the learning process before students are allowed to work as nurses&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0185"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">17</span></a> Friends become an affiliation which encourage interaction amongst students and prevents them from harming patients&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a> This is similar to Watson&#39;s theory&#44; which emphasizes on transpersonal care in order to protect and maintain the honour and integrity of the patient&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0150"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a> Caring behaviour is cultivated in peer groups by getting to know one another&#44; paying attention to sick friends&#44; supporting and encouraging each other&#44; as well as providing information on academics and non-academics studies&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0125"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> Motivation has a contribution to the caring behaviour of students&#46; The motivation given by peers becomes strength for students&#46; It also played a role in directing student behaviour and how to responds to a situation or action&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0190"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">18</span></a> Lack of motivation negatively impacts on their learning and caring behaviors&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0140"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a></p><p id="par0075" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Based on the explanation of the relationship between the two variables&#44; peer caring behaviour has an impact on developing student caring behaviour and peer caring behaviour can increase through caring group programmes&#46; Previous research stated that students with caring group programmes showed better caring behavior&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0195"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">19</span></a> The caring group programme was developed as a place for students and faculty members to develop caring&#46; This programme is considered as an opportunity to combine theory and practice to facilitates the provision of education and practice at the same time with a focus on increase in caring&#46;<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0200"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">20</span></a> This is consistent with recent research that found students with caring group programmes showed significant caring in knowledge&#44;
