A vivid view of the behaviors demonstrated by the engaged employee emerged such as belief in the organization, desire to work to make things better, understanding of business context and the “bigger picture”, respectful of, and helpful to, colleagues, willingness to “go the extra mile, and keeping up to date with developments in the field. Work engagement is considered to have great significance for both employees and organizations.</p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Work engagement is characterized by vigor, dedication, and absorption. Vigor is defined as “high levels of energy and mental resilience while working, the willingness to invest effort in one's work, and persistence even in the face of difficulties”.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0055"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> Nursing faculty are expected to perform multiple tasks that range from teaching nursing students, undertaking research activities, fulfilling an administrative role, facilitating support of staff in practice and providing patient care.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0060"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> Based on the study, employee engagement was tested for work intentions<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0060"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> and organizational performance.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0065"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a></p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">However, there is no clear a study that has been published regarding the level of work engagement among nurse-educators, especially in the local setting; thus, this study aims to determine the work engagement index of nurse-educators working in private higher education institution in Region III, Philippines. Likewise, this will be the basis for the improvement of faculty development program among nurse-educators.</p></span><span id="sec0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0045">Methods</span><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The study utilized sequential-explanatory mixed-methods design where the goal is to test the phenomenon thru quantitative as its first phase while explanation of the quantitative result thru qualitative research method will be conducted as its second phase.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0070"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4,5</span></a></p><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Private Colleges of Nursing in Region III, Philippines offering Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) participated. Purposive sampling technique was employed for the quantitative approach under the following inclusion criteria: (1) working as nurse-educators for at least 2 years already upon data collection; (2) either permanent, contractual, or probationary; (3) regardless of the rank or position in the college; and (4) willing to participate. Excluded are nurse-educators who are (1) newly hired or be in the College of Nursing but with less than 2 years in the service, or (2) nurse-educators but not handling professional nursing subjects.</p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Based on G power software, the minimum respondents must be 112 under 95% power; a medium effect size of 0.15, and 5% error to be considered enough for its sampling size in quantitative research. Likewise, the researchers extended the number of participants and it yielded a total 124 respondents to ensure the generalizability of the results.</p><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">For the qualitative part, seven (7) participants were invited for qualitative interview using nested sampling technique. This technique includes some cases coming from the quantitative sample to its qualitative part.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0075"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> Seven participants were engaged since saturation of data (redundancy) was achieved. The criteria are as follows: (1) nurse-educators with at least 5 years of experience as educators; (2) permanent; and (3) willing to participate. Excluded those nurse-educators who are considered under contractual or probationary status.</p><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">It utilized the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) developed by Schaufeli and Bakker<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0080"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> while the semi-structured open-ended interview guide was created based on the literature reviews of this manuscript and used for its qualitative interview. Ethical review was secured from a local university research ethics (ERC 2022-1C). Study was conducted from January to March 2022 thru online survey after the letter of approval was approved by university presidents through their respective deans. Consent was also secured as part of the protocol. Interview sessions (which lasted for about 30–40<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>min) for participants were also gathered online to ensure the safety of the researchers due to uncertain conditions of COVID-19 pandemic. For the quantitative part, weighted mean with description was used while for the qualitative part, content analysis using cold (extraction of significant themes from the narratives) and warm analysis (significant statements were categorized into cluster of themes) were employed.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0085"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a></p></span><span id="sec0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0050">Results</span><span id="sec0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0055">Quantitative part</span><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a> shows the frequency and percentage distribution of the respondents when grouped according to their profile. Based from the table, as to age bracket, it can be gleaned that there are more respondents who belong the age bracket of 31–40 years old which has a frequency of 44 and corresponds to 35.5 percent of the total sample. On the other hand, 61 years old and above has the least frequency among the group with only five (5) respondents constituting four (4) percent of the total sample. In terms of gender, can be observed from the table that there were more female since the frequency was 83 which correspond to a percentage of 66.9 of the total sample. The male counterpart, however, has a frequency of 41 with a corresponding 33.1 percent of the total sample population. In terms of civil status, there were more married respondents as compared to single, widowed, or separated ones. With a frequency of 74, the married respondents have a corresponding percentage of 59.7 of the total sample. However, the separated civil status got the least frequency of only four (4) respondents or 3.2 percent of the total sample followed closely by widowed with five (5) frequency or 4 percent. With regard to the highest educational attainment, it can be deducted from the presentation that Master's degree holders (MAN/MSN) dominated with a frequency of 73 with equivalent percentage of 58.9. On the other hand, the least frequency for the highest educational attainment belongs to the post-graduate studies (PhD/EdD) with a frequency of 15 or equivalent to 112.1 percent of the total sample. In terms of employment status, it can be gleaned that there are more respondents occupying the permanent position as compared to the contractual or probationary working status. 40 percent of the respondents or a frequency equivalent of 50 dominated the group and those who are in the probationary status got the least frequency of 30 or 24.2 percent of the total sample. At the same time, there were also 44 contractual respondents which correspond to 35.5 percent of the total sample. For the years of service, it can be deducted that there are more respondents who are still in their early days of their career (2 years) with a frequency of 45 which corresponds to 36.3 percent or more than one-third of the sample. On the other hand, the least frequency in terms of years of service belongs to those respondents with 6–10 years with a frequency of 17 or 13.7 percent of the total sample.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0010">Table 2</a> denotes to the level of work engagement in terms of vigor, the statement “At my work I always persevere, even when things do not go well” produced the highest weighted mean score of 4.67 interpreted as “very often.” However, the statement “At my work, I feel bursting with energy” disclosed the lowest mean score of 4.06 interpreted as “often.” The overall mean was pegged at 4.44 which considered “very often.”</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0010"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0015">Table 3</a> reveals the level of work engagement in terms of dedication, and the statement “I find the work that I do full of meaning and purpose” considered highest with mean score of 4.93 equates to “very often”. The lowest mean score was “To me, my job is challenging” with 4.71 described as “very often.” To sum, the average weighted mean score was 4.77 implied that the nurse-educators of their respective institutions have high work engagement in terms of dedication.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0015"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0020">Table 4</a> presents the level of work engagement in terms of absorption and the statement “I am immersed in my work” obtained the highest mean score of 5.08 corresponded as “very often” and the statement “It is difficult to detach myself from my job” presented the lowest mean score of 4.36 interpreted as “very often.” Altogether, the weighted mean was 4.84, which corresponds as “very often.”</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0020"></elsevierMultimedia></span><span id="sec0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0060">Qualitative part</span><p id="par0065" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall"><a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0025">Table 5</a> presents the demographic profile of the participants who were interviewed for qualitative part of this study. It shows that majority of the respondents are female (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>5) and the least were male participants (<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">n</span><span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>2). One of them is a dean of the college of nursing, two were academic coordinator, one clinical coordinator, and three faculty members. The highest years of service fall under 16 years and the least were 10 years of service.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0025"></elsevierMultimedia><span id="sec0030" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0065">Theme 1: Gratefulness: Sense of gratitude for positive atmosphere of superior and subordinate relationship</span><p id="par0070" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Positive organizational climate and support between the superiors (administrators) and the subordinates are very essential when it comes to work engagement and this can lead to increase the productivity, thereby, achieving the organizational vision, mission, objectives, and goals.</p></span><span id="sec0035" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0070">Subtheme 1: Good relationship with administrators/superiors</span><p id="par0075" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Having a good relationship with the administrators’ matters according to the participants. This principle taps the subordinate's internal motivation leading to the increase of loyalty. As such it can be the pathway for success for the organization especially in case of difficulties. As stated:<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0005"><p id="spar0030" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P2: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">The biggest reason why I stay is because I feel valued and supported. I believe that how the administration treats you is considered paramount and important, even there a lot of offers outside the organization.</span>”</p></span></p></span><span id="sec0040" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0075">Subtheme 2: Appreciation from administrators/superiors</span><p id="par0080" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Appreciation from the administrators is one of the precious things that they can give to their subordinates specially when a huge task was given and yet they manage to attain its end goal. A lot of work is considered a precursor of work disengagement. But recognition from administrators and tapping the shoulder of the subordinates may tend to change their perception toward happiness with their career as they will feel valued and having an import. As stated:<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0010"><p id="spar0035" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P1: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Nurse-educators really like when their work is appreciated by other staff and administration. Teachers also want autonomy in what they do. They don’t mind instruction or broad outlines, but are happy when they have room to plan and instruct in the way they believe best. They enjoy learning together, with the strong bonds built with their department during collaboration time.</span>”</p></span></p></span><span id="sec0045" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0080">Theme 2: Blissfulness: Sense of happiness and contentment of co-workers and workplace relationship</span><p id="par0085" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Blissfulness is considered a state of having an extreme happiness. This feature is somehow felt by the participants in their current job and workplace as they appear to gain positivity, satisfaction, and even support to their goals and endeavors in the department which may further intensify their work engagement.</p></span><span id="sec0050" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0085">Subtheme 3: Satisfaction in the workplace</span><p id="par0090" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">All of the nurse-educators are seeking a job where they can maximize their true potentials. As they execute their talents and skills, a support from the superior and co-workers is needed for them to grasps and overcome the challenges in the workplace. They depict that they mentoring and collaboration is vital to their progress and contentment in their job. As they stated:<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0015"><p id="spar0040" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P3: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">I am very satisfied with the mentoring and attitude of my superiors. She is a positive influencer to her community.</span>”</p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0020"><p id="spar0045" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P5: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Co-workers give assistance to his team. If you ever notice a coworker is struggling, see how you can help them. You could do this by offering to take on some of their work or simply being someone, they can talk to. Listen to their problems and try to think of solutions to help them overcome their challenges.</span>”</p></span></p></span><span id="sec0055" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0090">Subtheme 4: Positivity in the workplace</span><p id="par0095" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Positivity in the workplace is also a part of work engagement according to the participants. As they gain a sense of camaraderie, they tend to gain more happiness, contentment and enjoy the tasks that they need to fulfill despite of the different trials in the workplace. As stated:<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0025"><p id="spar0050" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P1: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">I enjoy working in an environment where the members of the faculty have a strong sense of camaraderie and a good work ethic.</span>”</p></span></p></span><span id="sec0060" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0095">Subtheme 5: Support of co-workers in the workplace</span><p id="par0100" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">A lot of challenges and obstacles along the way is waiting for the career in the nursing education. But despite of the huge tasks to fulfill, the nurse-educators are able to ensure that they may able to counter these things with the help of their co-workers as mentors:<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0030"><p id="spar0055" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P5: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Co-workers give assistance to his team. If you ever notice a coworker is struggling, see how you can help them. You could do this by offering to take on some of their work or simply being someone, they can talk to. Listen to their problems and try to think of solutions to help them overcome their challenges.</span>”</p></span></p></span><span id="sec0065" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0100">Theme 3: Willfulness: Sense of deliberate push toward work-environment to work-engagement relationship</span><p id="par0105" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Willfulness is a theme that denotes to the course of actions that they need to implement to ensure the contentment and loyalty of the nurse-educators leading to their quality of productivity and work engagement.</p></span><span id="sec0070" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0105">Subtheme 6: Opportunities for professional development</span><p id="par0110" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Professional development thru seminars, conferences and even post-graduate studies are key indicators according to participants that increase their work engagement. As they stated:<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0035"><p id="spar0060" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P3: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">My superior (Dean) recommended me to the top management for graduate school studies. The support of the management on our college is very overwhelming. I feel the generosity and kindness of my superiors. Kudos to my school!</span>”</p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0040"><p id="spar0065" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P6: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Our school is very supportive to all employees here, teaching and non-teaching. He gave scholarships to all teachers in regards to their graduate studies and attending seminars and trainings.</span>”</p></span></p></span><span id="sec0075" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0110">Subtheme 7: Precursors of work engagement</span><p id="par0115" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Aside from opportunities, several factors were provided by some of the participants that they considered as indicators of intensifying work engagement among nursing faculty may it be materials or non-materialistic things which is essential for their career pathways. They said:<span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0045"><p id="spar0070" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P1: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Proper compensation is one factor why I remain in this institution. Employee retention and low-turnover rates are great for employers this is also motivated to be part of that company, and they get the job done well.</span>”</p></span><span class="elsevierStyleDisplayedQuote" id="dsq0050"><p id="spar0075" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">P3: “<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">The school administration understands me and lets me do my thing. Plus, the work is challenging which makes it fun to come to work. When people feel valued, they feel better about coming in to work. Overall, it increases my morale and I feel motivated to come to work and do a good job.</span>”</p></span></p></span></span></span><span id="sec0080" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0115">Discussions</span><p id="par0120" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The result shows that nurse-educators are considered vigored in their practice and work attitude. The professionals who declared themselves satisfied or did not think of quitting the programs showed higher levels of engagement in relation to those who were dissatisfied or who thought of quitting the residency/development at some point.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0090"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8,9</span></a> Nurse-educators have great compassion and concern about the integrity and reputation of their respective institutions; therefore, they give their best effort and energy through working long hours in teachings and office just to finish certain tasks or goals. They feel stronger and enthusiastic to work because of the dynamic leadership and support of the management.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0090"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8,9</span></a></p><p id="par0125" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The study also implied that nurse-educators are definitely dedicated to the nature of their work in spite of the challenges and obstacles along the way. The meaning and purpose of what they really need to accomplish are justified for them to achieve the main objectives of the institution in providing quality service to its stakeholders. Dedication is considered as one of the best indicators of work engagement and most of the participants found to have higher score compared to vigor and absorption variables.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0100"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">10</span></a></p><p id="par0130" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">It also revealed that nurse-educators are always immersed and absorbed with what they are practicing in their work and their heart and passion is reflected from their response in the survey. Remember that having a passion to their workplace increases their job motivation and work engagement.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0095"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">9,10</span></a> Based on findings, they already have certain level of expertise and experience on how they are going to deal with the people in the middle and top management.</p></span><span id="sec0085" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0120">Conclusion</span><p id="par0135" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Based on the results, the nurse-educators work engagement index working in private higher education institution are very high which considered a manifestation that they truly devoted their time and space for the welfare of their stakeholders and even their own institution. However, based on the interview with the participants, we conclude that several factors are needed to be appraised to solidify the higher level of satisfaction leading to increase work engagement.</p></span><span id="sec0090" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0125">Limitation and specific recommendation</span><p id="par0140" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The study conducts data collection in private higher education institutions which may be different from findings to nurse-educators working government settings; hence, it is recommended to conduct a study in this context. But published studies about work engagement index among nurse-educator are lacking; hence, this study purported to fill this gap. Likewise, this will be the basis for the improvement of faculty development program among nurse-educators.</p></span> <span id="abst0010" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0015">Objective</span><p id="spar0010" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">The general purpose of the study is to determine the work engagement index among nurse-educators in Private Colleges of Nursing in Region III, Philippines.</p></span> <span id="abst0015" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0020">Method</span><p id="spar0015" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">Mixed-methods approach; specifically, a sequential-explanatory design was employed. It involved 124 from 21 identified private Colleges of Nursing in Region III via purposive sampling while seven (7) participants composed of two (2) deans and five (5) faculty members were recruited for the qualitative content analysis using the nested sampling technique. It utilized the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) by Schaufeli & Bakker for its quantitative data while a semi-structured interview guide was used for its qualitative data. Period of data collection was from January to March 2022 via online survey and interview was conducted via google meet and/or zoom conference. For the analysis, the quantitative approach, weighted mean was used while for the qualitative data analysis was done through content analysis.</p></span> <span id="abst0020" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0025">Results</span><p id="spar0020" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">The study revealed that nurse-educators have high work engagement as to vigor (WM<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>4.44), absorption (WM<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>4.77), and dedication (WM<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>4.84). These results were supported by the qualitative part with three emerging themes: gratefulness, blissfulness, and willfulness.</p></span> <span id="abst0025" class="elsevierStyleSection elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle" id="sect0030">Conclusion</span><p id="spar0025" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">It was concluded that several factors can produce a higher level of satisfaction leading to increase of work engagement as depicted by the participants of the study.
