La entrevista en grupo, especialmente en su modalidad de grupo focal o grupo de discusión, es en la actualidad la técnica más utilizada por los investigadores en salud cuando realizan estudios cualitativos. En este artículo, después de situar el origen sociológico de las técnicas grupales y de describir sus principales modalidades, se realiza una revisión crítica sobre sus utilidades y limitaciones en investigación cualitativa. Al final se propone la complementariedad metodológica como alternativa para la comprensión de la realidad compleja y subjetiva del paciente, que es el objeto de los abordajes cualitativos.
The group interview, especially in the form of focal or discussion groups, is currently the technique most frequently used by health researchers performing qualitative studies. In this article, first the sociological origins of group techniques and their principal modalities are discussed and secondly a critical review of their uses and limitations in qualitative research is provided. Finally, we propose methodological complementariness as an alternative in understanding the complex and subjective reality of the patient, which is the aim of qualitative approaches.
