In recent years, there have been introduced many new hypotensive drugs which act upon the central nervous system (CNS). These act specifically on imidazolic receptors, whose function in the central nervous system is to modulate sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity without acting directly on the adrenergic centers of the system. These agents have been shown to have fewer side-effects than conventional CNS agents. What is more, they seem to have a positive metabolic effect on insulin resistance. Their use offers new perspectives on the treatment of arterial hypertension for patients in which SNS activation plays a key role in the onset of such hypertension.
