My mandate ends this May, coinciding with the SERAM 2022 National Congress in Malaga, where the members will elect a new Committee chair. Of all the SERAM Board’s committees, I think Publications is one of the most appealing and reassuring.

When I decided to accept the position, my aim was to introduce a strategy that would not only maintain the successful trajectory already achieved by my predecessors but, with the support and collaboration of the members of the Board and the Publications Committee, would strengthen this important area of SERAM. So now it is time to take stock of the work this Committee has done over these last few years.

Among the responsibilities of the position, I have to highlight those related to the journal Radiología, which without doubt is the most prestigious and highest visibility radiology journal in Spanish worldwide. It has been a great pleasure to have worked over these years with the editors of the journal, first with Dr José María García Santos and then with Dr Luis Ros Mendoza. Both have done an extraordinary job, together with their entire Editorial Committee, reflected in the continued advances in the quality of the magazine. Last of all, I would like to welcome the new editor of Radiología, Dr Cristina García-Villar. With her experience in the field of publications and her enormous enthusiasm and dedication, Dr García-Villar plans to continue to improve the quality of the journal’s contents and the work of its reviewers, while streamlining the editorial process, with the aim of achieving an impact factor for the journal in the coming years.

Since 2019, the whole of Radiología has been translated into English. Along with its inclusion in PubMed, this helps increase the dissemination and visibility of the journal's articles. This is demonstrated by the fact that in 2021, 60% of the 70,000 downloads of its articles were in the English version, compared to 30% of the 37,000 downloads in 2018.

Also, to keep up with the times, we decided to offer Radiología to SERAM members only in its electronic format, for which an email alert system was created to inform all members about the contents of each issue.

The journal’s mechanism for accreditation of continuing education activities has been improved, as it is now affiliated with the Spanish Accreditation System for Continuing Medical Education (SEAFORMEC), which means there is better, more effective assessment of these activities: 9.0 credits compared to the prior 2.8. In order to highlight the excellent work of our editors and reviewers, and of the authors who publish in Radiología, in 2020 SERAM introduced awards for the most distinguished reviewers and, in collaboration with the Elsevier publishing house, for the article with the most citations. These awards are presented at the national congress.

One of the most important activities in recent years was the publication of the second edition of the book “Radiología Esencial” [“Essential Radiology”], which was presented at the 2018 SERAM congress held in Pamplona. The editors of “Essential Radiology”, with the help of the coordinators of all the different sections and the more than 200 radiologists who participated as authors, produced an edition with substantial content changes, the end result being an up-to-date reference book of interest to all Spanish-speaking radiologists. After publication of this second edition, it was decided to renew the bank of self-assessment questions (more than 950, the vast majority of them based on radiological images) to adapt them to the new contents, and this will be available free of charge for all members at the end of May. It will certainly be a useful resource for SERAM radiologists to assess their training level and prepare for the examinations for public job offer selection processes.

In 2016, for SERAM’s centenary (1916–2016), we saw the publication of the book “100 años de la SERAM” [“100 years of SERAM”], in which prestigious Spanish radiologists analysed the past, present and future of Spanish radiology.

The SERAM Virtual Library is one of the services most appreciated and valued by members, and currently includes 22 international journals covering different radiological subspecialities. Close to 40,000 article downloads are completed every year. Although that number is significantly lower than a few years ago, attributable to journals being accessed through improved hospital library services, the increase in Open Access articles and also, we might as well say it, accessibility through illegal websites, SERAM still considers this service to be of great use to its members.

In addition, a specific section has been created on the SERAM website for the journal Radiología, organised by Dr José Alberto Merino and Dr Daniel Eiroa, as well as a section entitled, “What do Spanish radiologists publish?”. This contains information on articles of special relevance published in international journals by Spanish radiologists who are members of SERAM, and doctoral theses, with the corresponding links to access their contents, all with the aim of building a repository to increase the visibility of members’ scientific activities.

For SERAM national congresses, the congress and SERAM publications areas have promoted the publication of Special Issues, which are now included in a special supplement to the journal Radiología, covering broad-ranging subjects, such as “Imaging in oncology” (Pamplona 2018), “Controversies in radiology” (Zaragoza 2020) and “Structured radiological report” (Malaga 2022). In addition to that, however, thanks to the improvement in SERAM’s finances, as of this year (2022), Radiología is going to resume publication of supplements not associated with the national congress.

One of the objectives of this Committee has also been to promote training in the field of publications, for which we organised different editions of the “Online Publications Course”, with the most recent held last February, directed by Dr Drake and Dr Lojo. These courses are particularly aimed at medical residents and radiologists in the early years of their careers, to introduce them to the field of publications and provide them with the essential knowledge and information they need to prepare an article for publication in a scientific journal, and thus comply with the recommendations of our speciality’s training programme. Also with training as the objective, the SERAM Publications Committee has continued to select the winners of the Dr Calatayud scholarship for scientific publishing, established by the Spanish Radiology Foundation (FER), aimed at radiology residents and radiologists in their first years of specialisation. The proposed aims of this scholarship are to transmit enthusiasm for academic careers, promote the journal Radiología, encourage research, stimulate publications and motivate people to pursue a career in the field of medical publishing.

The year 2021 saw the launch of the “Revista Virtual de Radiología” [Virtual Journal of Radiology], the editor of which is Dr Sara Lojo. The aim of this journal is to generate the exchange of scientific information and provide a tool to help us keep up to date with the work of the different radiological societies. The journal will come out on a quarterly basis, with free access for all SERAM members, and will include different articles recently published in the respective journals of these societies, each with a brief critical review.

For 2022, the objectives of the publications area include promoting in the press (Medical Writing) original articles of special relevance published by SERAM member radiologists through interviews with their main author, and holding practical webinars for training in the process of submitting and reviewing papers to the journal Radiología.

I cannot end this recap without thanking all the members of the “SERAM Publications Committee” and all the members of the different SERAM Boards of Directors with whom I have had the pleasure of working in recent years, for all their work and support, and especially all the SERAM members who, generously and with great enthusiasm, have collaborated in the different publications and training activities carried out by this Committee.
" "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true "NotaPie" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "☆" "nota" => "
Please cite this article as: Rovira À.
