Las infecciones siguen siendo la causa más frecuente de patología orbitaria aguda no traumática y un motivo relativamente frecuente de solicitud de pruebas de imagen en el servicio de urgencias. Las infecciones pueden afectar a cualquier parte de la órbita, siendo la afectación postseptal la que con mayor frecuencia justifica la realización de pruebas de imagen, debido a su potencial gravedad y a sus posibles complicaciones. El diagnóstico diferencial de la patología orbitaria aguda es amplio e incluye no solo entidades infecciosas sino también patologías inflamatorias y neoplásicas. Es importante saber reconocer estas entidades para poder instaurar un tratamiento precoz y evitar complicaciones graves. En este artículo se revisan, mediante casos ilustrativos, las patologías orbitarias de origen infeccioso, sus potenciales complicaciones y su diagnóstico diferencial.
Infection remains the most common cause of non-traumatic acute orbital pathology and a relatively common reason for requesting radiological examinations in the emergency department. Infection can affect any part of the orbit but postseptal involvement most frequently justifies imaging requests, due to its potential severity and associated complications. The differential diagnosis of acute orbital pathology is broad and includes not only infectious entities but also inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. It is important to know how to recognise these entities in order to establish early treatment and avoid serious complications. This article reviews, through case images, orbital pathologies of infectious origin, their potential complications and their differential diagnosis.
