Cystic adventitial degeneration is a rarely occurring entity of still unknown ethiology. It has been diagnosed more frequently in recent years, with the popliteal artery being that most commonly affected. It is observed primarily in middle aged males, and is an important pathology to consider in the differential diagnosis of intermittent claudication.

Although arteriography continues to provide the best diagnostic method, new non-invasive imaging techniques have been developed in recent years which have also contributed in performing non-invasive diagnoses.
