Longfellow

As is now well-known, as of May 2022, after the National Congress to be held in Malaga, I will be officially passing on the torch as the editor-in-chief of Radiología

The invitation from the SERAM (Sociedad Española de Radiología Médica [Spanish Society of Medical Radiology]) Board of Directors in 2017 to take the reins of the journal as editor-in-chief was a pleasant surprise. This activity had not been part of my road map, but I did not hesitate; being able to serve SERAM has always been an honour and a privilege. Furthermore, Radiología, the calling card for our organisation, reflects what we Spanish radiologists are, and together with the National Congress represents the maximum scientific activity of SERAM, so what better task to get involved in.

I accepted unconditionally, with 2 very clear ideas about what the role to be performed over these 4 years should be: on the one hand, to maintain and, if possible, strengthen the fine standard of the journal, achieving its internationalisation and, on the other, to promote the proper training of young radiologists, as the emerging future of the journal, in the field of editorialism, attempting to achieve a “professionalisation” of said teaching. This was an initial declaration of intentions included in the editorial published in May 2018,1 in which an “open door policy” was advocated for, making a call to all those who were interested in cooperating with the journal.

I prepare this editorial on the basis of memories, “recuerdos” in Spanish, that come to me spontaneously, according to the etymological meaning of this term, from the Latin recordari: re (again) and cordis (heart): that which springs directly from the heart. This is not the time to overwhelm you with numerical or technical data, which, incidentally, were detailed a year ago in the editorial that was published on the occasion of the last National Congress of Radiology2; you have enough evidence, based on the day to day, to assess how the journal has evolved over the last 4 years.

If I were to highlight the achievements that, in my opinion, have been the most significant, and from a personal point of view the most satisfying, I would say that the first has been the increasing interest young radiologists have in the journal and the field of editorialism, which has translated into a progressively greater number of candidates who attended the annual editorial scholarships convened by SERAM, both for residents and for young associates (which has justified the fact that the number of scholarships has had to double). No fewer than 10 fellows have spent several days in Zaragoza over these years to receive face-to-face training; many others have received virtual training. The continuation of the journal seems assured.

Another important milestone is the beginning of its English version in 2019. The translation of all the journal's content has enabled greater dissemination and visibility and has exponentially increased the number of downloads of its articles on the different platforms.

This greater dissemination of the journal has justified a significant increase in the number of articles received annually, many of them original, which suggests a possible change in the journal's profile in the not-too-distant future, which has until now been based on the concept of continuing education, and allows for a reserve of manuscripts that enables us to face the future with optimism. With the increase in originals will come, progressively, an increase in the number of citations and with those, the impact factor. We are on the right track.

Such authorised and representative voices as the editors of European Radiology and Go Rad, the president of the American Board of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America, or the secretary of the European Society of Pathological Anatomy, among others, who produced outstanding editorials that gave the journal prestige, have contributed to the internationalisation of Radiología, which has tried to take on a multidisciplinary character

The third point of interest has been the achievement of an accreditation of continuing education activities in accordance with the importance and interest aroused by the journal; 9 annual credits granted by SEAFORMEC, which means that these activities are followed by a large number of radiologists and that our journal is considered an extraordinarily useful instrument for continuing education.

In this sense, with a vision of the future, we have attempted to expand the limits of the journal, involving radiology residents through the Club Bibliográfico [Bibliographic Club], which is doing such excellent work, and also arousing the interest of medical students, it being planned that they have a specific section in the new web space for the journal.

Looking back, I think that the proposed objectives have been met, the journal is being left with the highest ratings and metrics, with stable progression, without ups and downs (the journal, by virtue of this continued progression, is being evaluated by Clarivate for its possible inclusion in the Science Citation Index Expanded), and with an estimate of the impact factor (source Web of Science) at an all-time high. Furthermore, the recently published bibliometric analysis of the journal for the period 2010–2019 provides relevant information on its evolution and current situation, which will make it possible to propose modifications and improvements to the editorial strategy, adapting its content to the preferences of our readers.3

A stage has been completed, in which Radiología as a dynamic entity, undergoing continuous change and evolution, has tried to adapt to the times and intercurrent situations, getting involved and transmitting the pulse of the events in a period as turbulent as the one we have had to live through in relation to the COVID pandemic, either through editorial comments4 or through an excellent series of articles dedicated to transmitting the most recent knowledge about this disease, thus contributing to the good work of radiologists.

Over the course of these 4 years, the journal has learned to adapt to new technologies, integrate them into its service (it advertises on social networks, has its own space on the SERAM website, etc.), and even though the potential challenge of artificial intelligence remains, these will always be an instrument at the service of the author or the reader. In my opinion, quality, commitment and dedication, in short, the human factor, will as always continue to prevail over technology.

I must thank the authors who sent us their articles and the reviewers, editors and members of the Editorial Committee for their commitment, altruism and dedication. We have become a big family over the years and we have worked very well together.

I must also highlight the invaluable help and cooperation of the Elsevier staff: Beatriz Mas, publishing editor, and Sandra Delgado, manager of the journal. Their experience and professionalism have been fundamental to the journal's progress.

Dr. Alejandro Rovira deserves special mention, being responsible for Society publications, approachable, always willing to facilitate our work, and above all the SERAM Board of Directors for the opportunity to enjoy this extraordinary experience which I have been given.

It is said that the domain of editorialism can be unrewarding, requires extensive dedication and in our environment is usually unpaid and sometimes inadequately valued. In my case, it has been 4 wonderful years, which have allowed me to get in touch with some very interesting people and broaden my perspective of the specialty and scientific knowledge in general.

What Radiología is, and the heights it reaches in the future depend on all of us. Therefore, I encourage you to continue cooperating and working along these same lines, supporting Dr. García Villar, the new editor-in-chief, in this new cycle of the journal. I wish her an experience that is as fascinating as it has been for me.

As Nicholas Sparks (Message in a Bottle) said: ‘This is not a goodbye, but a “thank you”’.
" "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true "NotaPie" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "☆" "nota" => "
Please cite this article as: Ros Mendoza LH, Radiología, 4 años después, Radiología. 2022;64:193–194.
" ] ] "bibliografia" => array:2 [ "titulo" => "References" "seccion" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "bibs0005" "bibliografiaReferencia" => array:4 [ 0 => array:3 [ "identificador" => "bib0005" "etiqueta" => "1" "referencia" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "contribucion" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "titulo" => "Ante una nueva etapa" "autores" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etal" => false "autores" => array:1 [ 0 => "L.H.
