Since the invention of angiography by Egas de Moriz (who probably deserved the Nobel prize for this reason rather than for the reason he received it), the use of percutaneous access to perform diagnostic techniques has converted radiologists, or at least many of us, into interventional radiologists. And it should be remembered that, despite the fact that the official name of the specialty is “radio diagnosis”, radiology has also developed a broad therapeutic component.

For many years, vascular and interventional radiologists enjoyed a kind of exclusivity in performing image-guided procedures. This began to change with scope-guided percutaneous biopsy procedures and, in an unstoppable way, with the appearance of computed tomography and ultrasound, which opened a huge field for performing a multitude of new procedures guided by these two techniques.

Ultrasound is, undoubtedly, due to its great availability, the technique that has most contributed to bringing interventional radiology closer to the average radiologist. Although percutaneous procedures can be performed using any of the radiological imaging methods as a guide, the selection of one or another depends on various factors: the location of the lesion, the availability of equipment, the characteristics of the patient and, above all, the experience or personal preferences of the radiologist.

Perhaps due to the need for a certain motor coordination and practical training in its use, procedures guided by ultrasound developed more slowly than those with computed tomography or fluoroscopy.1,2 However, thanks to the work of many pioneers, the use of ultrasound-guided procedures has spread enormously and today they constitute an important part of the activity of advanced radiology services, now representing the largest number of image-guided procedures, especially in breast, musculoskeletal and paediatric radiology.

And that is because ultrasound is the ideal technique to guide procedures when the lesion is visible with this technique: it is cheaper and more available than alternative techniques, it does not use ionising radiation, it enables the procedure to be performed in real time with continuous control of the needle’s position, it is portable, and it is extremely versatile, as it can be used in any plane and almost in any part of the anatomy.1–5

Ultrasound-guided interventional radiology has also contributed to fostering the interest in ultrasound among the new generations of radiologists who find in these techniques a new and promising field, not subject to the slavery of the chair and the workstation. But it also has its limitations: there are regions that ultrasound does not reach, especially the deep ones or the air and bone structures, and it requires, like any procedure, skill and training.3–6

Years ago, Radiology published some articles that reviewed the general aspects of interventional ultrasound.3,4 In future issues, this update will be continued through a series of articles that will include some of the latest news. The aim of the series is not to carry out an exhaustive review of this huge field of radiology, but to update and publicise some of the newest or most practical applications, make them available to the radiologist community and encourage interest in them.
Conflicts of interest
The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest.
" "textoCompletoSecciones" => array:1 [ "secciones" => array:2 [ 0 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0005" "titulo" => "Conflicts of interest" ] 1 => array:1 [ "titulo" => "References" ] ] ] "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true "NotaPie" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "☆" "nota" => "
Please cite this article as: del Cura JL.
