Ultrasound of the gastrointestinal tract

Since the 1990s, gastrointestinal ultrasound has been advocated as a useful tool for evaluating acute and chronic gastrointestinal diseases. Many articles have shown it to be useful in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of diseases such as appendicitis, diverticulitis, bowel obstruction and inflammatory bowel disease. Gastrointestinal ultrasound is also effective for ruling out these disorders and corroborating suspicion of functional diseases.
Despite numerous studies being published in gastroenterology journals in particular, this technique has not yet been incorporated into day-to-day clinical practice at many hospitals.
To this end, with the help of several experts, a series of review articles has been written to set out an updated vision for gastrointestinal ultrasound.
