"apellidos" => "Mitjavila" "email" => array:1 [ 0 => "mercedes.mitjavila@salud.madrid.org" ] "referencia" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "<span class="elsevierStyleSup">c</span>" "identificador" => "aff0015" ] ] ] ] "afiliaciones" => array:3 [ 0 => array:3 [ "entidad" => "Unidad de Radiofarmacia, Servicio de Medicina Nuclear, Clínica Universidad de Navarra, IdiSNA, Pamplona, Spain" "etiqueta" => "a" "identificador" => "aff0005" ] 1 => array:3 [ "entidad" => "Curium Pharma Spain S.A., Madrid, Spain" "etiqueta" => "b" "identificador" => "aff0010" ] 2 => array:3 [ "entidad" => "Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro, Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain" "etiqueta" => "c" "identificador" => "aff0015" ] ] "correspondencia" => array:1 [ 0 => array:3 [ "identificador" => "cor0005" "etiqueta" => "⁎" "correspondencia" => "Corresponding author." ] ] ] ] "titulosAlternativos" => array:1 [ "es" => array:1 [ "titulo" => "Recomendaciones para la nomenclatura de compuestos radiomarcados" ] ] "textoCompleto" => "<span class="elsevierStyleSections"><p id="par0005" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">After having observed incorrect or inadequate use of the appropriate terminology for chemical radiopharmaceuticals by the community of radiopharmaceutical chemistry sciences, in 2015 an international working group was created on <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">“</span>Nomenclature in Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry and related areas<span class="elsevierStyleItalic">”.</span> The fruit of this labor led to the establishment of consensus directives with harmonized recommendations on the nomenclature of radiopharmaceutical chemistry<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0005"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> with four fundamental objectives.<ul class="elsevierStyleList" id="lis0005"><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0005"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">1</span><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Provide a reference source on adequate use of nomenclature related to this field.</p></li><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0010"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">2</span><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Clarify the use of terms and rules of applications exclusive to radiopharmaceutical terminology.</p></li><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0015"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">3</span><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Address doubts and inconsistences in the current radiochemistry nomenclature.</p></li><li class="elsevierStyleListItem" id="lsti0020"><span class="elsevierStyleLabel">4</span><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Provide a reference source for groups involved in the review of texts containing these terms (publishers, editors, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry [IUPAC], pharmacopeias, etc.).</p></li></ul></p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">A summary of these guidelines has recently been published<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0010"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> with the objective of facilitating their diffusion and in an attempt to ensure that these norms are included in the instructions for authors of the different scientific journals which usually publish articles containing radiochemistry terms and/or names of radiochemical and radiopharmaceutical compounds.</p><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In this sense the Spanish Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (REMNIM) would like to acknowledge the convenience of the authors of manuscripts submitted to this journal to take these norms into account.</p><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This will ensure the standardization of the scientific terms used by creating a common convention for terms and definitions and ruling out ambiguous and inappropriate terms which are frequently used in our setting.</p><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">If the symbol of an element in a chemical formula (together with its atomic number, i.e., 99mTc) or in combination with the name of a chemical compound is written without brackets, this indicates that all the molecules of the compound contain the (radio)nuclide referred. This is extremely rare in practice and considers the frequent case of the technetium radiopharmaceuticals which always include a fraction of molecules labeled with technetium-99 and not technetium-99m.</p><p id="par0050" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Consequently, to indicate the enrichment of a compound with an isotope (whether this be radioactive or not), the symbol of the element should be indicated together with the atomic number as a superscript and written in brackets [99mTc] immediately before the name of the compound or its formula without a space (i.e., [18O]H2O, [131I]NaI, [99mTc] sodium pertechnetate…).</p><p id="par0055" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In the case of labeling or substitutions with a radioactive element, it would be correct to state “labeling with fluor-18” for example, but it would not be correct to write “radiolabeling with fluor” or “radiolabeling with fluor-18” or “labeling with 18F”, or in this case it would be correct to write “compound labeled with galium-68” and not “compound labeled with [68Ga]” or “compound radiolabeled with galium”.</p><p id="par0060" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Taking into account the complexity that adequate use of nomenclature involves, a table has been provided showing the recommended names of some of the radiopharmaceuticals of interest (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#tbl0005">Table 1</a>) to facilitate the transition to this system by the authors of the manuscripts submitted to the REMNIM.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="tbl0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0065" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Nonetheless, although the name proposed should be used, if a “trivial” name which facilitates the reading of the text is placed in parenthesis after the first use of the term, this should be accepted, provided that it has been previously described in the text. The Revista Española de Medicina Nuclear e Imagen Molecular (Spanish Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging), was founded in 1982, and is the official journal of the Spanish Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, which has more than 700 members. The Journal, which publishes 6 regular issues per year, has the promotion of research and continuing education in all fields of Nuclear Medicine as its main aim. For this, its principal sections are Originals, Clinical Notes, Images of Interest, and Special Collaboration articles. The works may be submitted in Spanish or English and are subjected to a peer review process.
