Abstract

Plants are considered as an alternative system for a cost-effective production of recombinant biopharmaceuticals, the concept termed as molecular farming. While plant-based production systems have demonstrated success in producing viral vaccines, the application of plant systems to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) production is still in an earlier stage. The plant-derived ICIs have demonstrated efficacy in proof-of-concept studies; however, further research is essential to comprehensively assess their efficacy, safety, and potential for clinical application.

Las plantas son consideradas un sistema alternativo para la producción rentable de biofarmacéuticos recombinantes, denominándose el concepto agricultura molecular. A pesar de que los sistemas de producción basados en las plantas han demostrado tener éxito en la manufactura de vacunas virales, la aplicación de los sistemas de plantas a la producción de inhibidores de puntos de control inmunitarios (ICIs) se encuentra aún en una fase temprana. Los ICI derivados de las plantas han demostrado su eficacia en los estudios de prueba de concepto; sin embargo, es necesaria mayor investigación para evaluar ampliamente su eficacia, seguridad y potencial para la aplicación clínica.
