El resumen histórico de la medicina y la cirugía incluyen múltiples aportaciones de muy diversos autores a lo largo de los siglos desde la medicina hipocrática. El conocimiento de la circulación de la sangre ha llevado al desarrollo de un número de técnicas para conseguir derivar sangre a territorios isquémicos. La cirugía de las arterias coronarias es relativamente reciente tal y como la conocemos en la actualidad, datando las primeras referencias acerca de la cirugía directa de las arterias coronarias y de la revascularización miocárdica de principios de los años 60 del siglo XX. Los pioneros de este tipo de cirugía fueron, entre otros, E.H. Garrett, G.E. Green y R.G. Favaloro, sin olvidar las contribuciones de diversos autores que, con anterioridad, desarrollaron técnicas indirectas de revascularización, como A. Vineberg y P.K. Sen. Desde las contribuciones de R.G. Favaloro hace 40 años, la cirugía coronaria ha conocido su desarrollo y esplendor.
A historical summary of medicine and surgery include multiple contributions by different authors throughout centuries from hippocratic medicine. The knowledge on the circulation of the blood led to the development of techniques to bring blood to ischemic territories. The surgery of the coronary arteries as we know it today is relatively young. The first references are dated in the second half of the XX century. The pioneers were E.H. Garrett, G.E. Green and R.G. Favaloro without neglecting the contributions of other authors who previously developed the techniques of indirect myocardial revascularization, like A. Vineberg and P.K. Sen. From the contributions of R.G. Favaloro forty years ago, the surgery of the coronary arteries has fully developed up to what we currently know.
