El XXI Congreso de la Sociedad Española de Cirugía Torácica-Cardiovascular (SECTCV) se celebra en Sevilla del 13–16 de junio. Es la reunión principal que promueve la SECTCV en su búsqueda del intercambio profesional. Ya hemos repetido en diversas ocasiones la importancia que un evento, bianual en este caso, tiene para la sociedad científica y sus miembros1. No obstante, hay también que recordar que el congreso societario no debe ser considerado como el único evento que organice una sociedad, sino que debe encuadrarse dentro de las actividades formativas y organizativas que se generan con frecuencia cambiante. Nuestra SECTCV organiza diversas reuniones de tamaño y formato variable en función del contenido y el público al que se dirige. Un ejemplo asimismo conocido es el Curso de Residentes, actividad formativa que ya ha alcanzado su madurez.
En anteriores documentos hemos hecho hincapié en que la SECTCV tiene como objetivo que el programa científico sea de la máxima calidad2 por el impacto que tienen o pueden tener las contribuciones que se presentan en el congreso sobre la práctica profesional. En congresos previos se detectó un número de contribuciones limitado para ser evaluadas por el Comité Científico y un número escaso de contribuciones para su eventual publicación en la nuestra revista Cirugía Cardiovascular. La actitud de los socios de la SECTCV siempre ha sido positiva con respecto a las actividades formativas, si bien el volumen del material sometido a consideración se ha visto estancado en los últimos años.
El Congreso de Sevilla debe ser bien recibido por muchas razones. De ellas, una muy importante es que se ha producido un aumento muy marcado de las contribuciones de los socios y simpatizantes de nuestra SECTCV. El Comité Científico ha tenido la oportunidad de evaluar 291 comunicaciones recibidas dentro del plazo marcado, de las cuales 185 eran para presentación oral, 89 para presentación póster y 17 eran vídeos quirúrgicos. Estas cifras son explicativas en sí mismas y sirven para confirmar, con alegría, que la SECTCV es una sociedad científica viva, con independencia de su reducido tamaño en comparación con otros grupos científicos.
El programa científico ha sido cuidadosamente confeccionado por el Comité Científico, el Comité Local Organizador y la Junta Directiva de la SECTCV, y se presenta, como en ediciones anteriores, en las siguientes páginas. Si bien la evolución observada en la última década era positiva, la progresión no parecía lo intensa que la propia SECTCV esperaba. La insistencia desde estas páginas en cuanto a la necesidad de contribución por parte de los socios se ve compensada con las cifras presentadas en el párrafo anterior. La Junta Directiva y el Comité Local Organizador se complacen en confirmar que el número de comunicaciones es el máximo que se ha registrado en la sede de la SECTCV y que, además, son hasta ahora 29 los trabajos recibidos relacionados con el material que se presentará en el Congreso.
La SECTCV tiene un presente difícil pero prometedor, en tanto en cuanto las contribuciones de sus socios y amigos confirman que hay un tejido profesional emprendedor y que confía en un desarrollo para el futuro en el que la calidad sea un medio y un objetivo. El programa del XXI Congreso de la SECTCV así lo define.
The XXI Congress of the Spanish Society for Thoracic-Cardiovascular Surgery (SECTCV) is hold in Sevilla the coming 13–16 of June. It is the main meeting promoted and organized by the SECTCV looking for professional exchange. We have repeated a number of times the importance that an event, biennial in this case, may have for the scientific society and its members1. However, it is also to be reminded that the congress should not be considered the only event organized by the society, but it must be placed within the reach of the society in its commitment for education. Our SECTCV organizes a number of meetings of diverse size and format according to the contents and the public to which the activities are created. A well known example is the Residents Course, an educational activity that reached its maturity.
In prior documents we have insisted that the SECTCV has the objective of a high quality scientific programme2 due to the impact that the scientific contents may have on the professional practice. In prior congresses a limited number of contributions for evaluation by the Scientific Committee were submitted. The same applied for the originals submitted for publication in Cirugía Cardiovascular. The attitude of the members of SECTCV has always positive with regards the educational and formative activities although the volume of the material submitted for evaluation remained stable in recent years.
We have to welcome the Sevilla Congress for many reasons. Among them and a very important is that a significant increase in the number of contributions submitted by members and allied professionals of our SECTCV has been detected. The Scientific Committee has been able to evaluate 291 abstracts received within the deadline; of them, 185 were for oral presentation, 89 for poster presentation and there were 17 surgical motion pictures. These numbers are self-explanatory and confirm that the SECTCV is a living scientific society, regardless of its small size when compared with other scientific societies.
The scientific programme has carefully been assembled by the Scientific Committee, the Local Organizing Committee and the Council of the SECTCV and it is presented in the pages that follow. Although the observed changes in the past decade were positive, this progression never looked too intense as expected by the SECTCV. We have insisted from these pages to the need for contributions and this is well compensated by the amount of work submitted this year. The Council and the Local Organizing Committee are pleased to announce that this year we had a record number of abstracts and that, furthermore, 29 full papers related to the congress have been received up to now in the headquarters of the SECTCV.
The SECTCV has a complex present, however promising as it is confirmed by the contributions of members and friends that confirm an entrepreneurial professional tissue. The SECTCV is convinced on future development with quality as a mean and objective. The programme of the XXI Congress clearly defines this.
