Introduction. We describe a surgical technique for eventration repair using polypropylene mesh.
Patients and methods. The technique was performed in 170 consecutive patients who were treated surgically between the end of 1991 and the end of 1996, all of whom were asked, by mail, to undergo follow-up studies on two occasions.
Results. Thirty-four patients failed to comply with follow-up. Of the 124 (72.9%) who were examined physically, only one, who presents an asymptomatic subxiphoid recurrence measuring 2 cm, situated above the prosthesis, continues to undergo yearly check-ups. Another two patients who had undergone the repair of a supraumbilical eventration developed infraumbilical recurrence, but they had been repaired months before follow-up and are presently asymptomatic.
Conclusions. Given the good results obtained with this technique, it is highly recommendable for the treatment of abdominal wall hernia or eventration
