Abstract

Manufacturing strategy constitutes a research topic in Operations Management. Literature on manufacturing strategy has focused on analysis of content and process, however the theorical and empirical evidence in manufacturing generic configurations research hasn’t been too developed. The aim of this work is to identify a taxonomy of manufacturing strategies in Spanish industrial companies belonging to different sectors. The taxonomy is based on competitive priorities such as cost, quality, flexibility, delivery, after sale service and environmental protection; widening thus the classic objectives when we added the environmental consideration. For each identified manufacturing strategy, the differences between competitive strategy, structural and infrastructural production decisions, and performance measures are explored and compared.
