Vitamins and minerals are essential micronutrients in human nutrition to maintain adequate intermediate metabolism. Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of micronutrients such as folic acid, vitamin E, selenium, and calcium in preventing or treating certain diseases. The criteria for supplementation should be established, based on safety and efficacy studies. Nutritional education programs aimed at the general public could contribute to the rational use of nutritional supplements.
