successful ageing, improved quality of life and wellbeing.3 Therefore, impaired cognitive and behavioural functioning will result in social isolation, loss of autonomy, impaired short-term memory, disturbances in thought, in orientation and the ability to adapt to the environment. Therefore, seeking to generate more independent evidence in the context of other research studies, we briefly present the results of a study whose aim was to determine the relationship between cognitive and behavioural functioning and the quality of life of OA in the city of Trujillo, Peru.

Ninety-three OA from the city of Trujillo participated in the study, of both sexes (51 men and 42 women), with no diagnosis of severe or serious mental impairment, chosen by simple random sampling, and aged between 65 and 88 years (M=74.97; SD=7.055). We used the Clifton assessment procedures for the elderly to measure cognitive and behavioural functioning, and Olson's quality of life scale. Table 1 shows that the correlations between the means of cognitive and behaviour functioning and quality of life were statistically significant (p<.01), as well as practically significant (r>.20). Thus, the results suggest that physical inability to undertake daily activities, problems in relating to others, communication difficulties and failing to adapt to the social environment, are associated with poor quality of life.
