Based on the results of this research, it appears that most participants chose the profession willingly, and although the data were collected after the COVID-19 pandemic, their willingness to leave the profession was somewhat low. In addition, nurses who did not want to leave their profession had higher mean scale scores. Studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic showed that the intention to leave the profession was affected by many personal and institutional factors. In such times of crisis, professional commitment can be increased with measures to protect the professional values and personal rights of nurses, improve their working conditions, and increase mental health and well-being.29–31

The nurses’ mean scores from the CNPI (short form) importance, competence, and feasibility variables were found to be high, all close to the maximum score of 115. Using the short form, Abu Sharour et al.32 found a similar overall scale score, with a positive relationship between nurses’ self-efficacy, self-confidence, and nurse-patient interaction.33 In other studies with nurses using CNPI (long form), Sertgöz and Demir22 found average scores of importance, competence, and feasibility also high, while in the study by Kaçmaz and Çam, the mean scores were similarly high, respectively.25,26 In international studies using the long form of CNPI, Vujanic et al. and Fortuno et al. reported a nearly close score to the maximum possible score of 5.33,34 In studies with future nurses, Kaymak Özsezer et al. found similar mean scores of the importance, competence, and feasibility variables to Tan and Polat’s study.35,36 Thus, similar results were obtained with this study in other national and international studies, and the mean scale score was found to be high. First, the study was conducted with nurses from two private hospitals in Istanbul, Turkey. Therefore, the sample is predictable, and the generalizability of the results only to the corresponding population is one of the most important limitations. Second, the research findings are based on nurses’ self-reports. During data collection, the participants’ identities were kept confidential to protect their anonymity so that they could honestly report their problems. The data collection was between May and August 2022 and the COVID-19 pandemic at that time may have affected the results. Finally, the cross-sectional nature of the research design should be considered when interpreting the results. Since the validity of the Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale, one of the data collection tools used in this research, was established in 2022, another limitation is that there are limited studies on the subject.
Conclusion
It was determined that the levels of humanistic practice ability among the nurses participating in this study were high, and their perceptions of caring nurse-patient interaction were positive. The relationship between caring nurse-patient interaction and nurses’ humanistic practice ability was moderately positive and statistically significant. Considering the scores of the nurses, it can be concluded that they deem caring nurse-patient interaction important and feel somewhat competent but cannot transfer this into practice. Nurses’ humanistic practice ability and caring nurse-patient interaction levels can be improved through postgraduate and in-service training. Concepts affecting nurse-patient interaction, such as the philosophy of humanism, spiritual aspects of care and spirituality, holistic care, communication skills, empathy, and emotional intelligence, should be discussed in detail in the educational content. In future studies, humanistic practice ability and caring nurse-patient interaction levels should be evaluated with larger samples from different regions and using other nursing care models.
Ethics
The ethical approval was given by the Biruni University Non-Interventional Ethics Committee on April 1st, 2022 (Decision No.: 2022/68-40).

Declaration of authorship statement

Both authors have contributed to the preparation of the manuscript, and have read, and approved the submitted manuscript.
