Creemos de interés conocer si en las mujeres españolas se encuentran aumentados los valores de homocisteína tras la menopausia.</p> <span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle">Pacientes y método</span><p id="spar0010" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">En 100 mujeres posmenopáusicas (edad media [DE] 56 [6] años) se determinaron las concentraciones de homocisteína, creatinina, ácido fólico, vitamina B12 y lipoproteínas. Los controles fueron 50 mujeres con menstruaciones periódicas (edad: 29 [6] años), 50 varones con edad similar a las mujeres posmenopáusicas y 50 varones con edad similar a las premenopáusicas. Todos los sujetos del estudio se encontraban sanos.</p> <span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle">Resultados</span><p id="spar0015" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">Las concentraciones de homocisteína fueron más elevadas en las mujeres posmenopáusicas que en las premenopáusicas (8,6 [2,1]; intervalo de confianza [IC] del 95%, 8,2-9,1, frente a 7,7 [1,6]; IC del 95%, 7,2-8,1<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>μmol/l; p<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span><<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0,05), sin que fueran diferentes en los dos grupos de varones. Se objetivó hiperhomocisteinemia en 9 mujeres posmenopáusicas y en ninguna premenopáusica (el 9 frente al 0%; p<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>=<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0,03). Los valores de colesterol unido a las lipoproteínas de baja densidad fueron superiores (155 [32]; IC del 95%, 148-161, frente a 111 [32]; IC del 95%, 101-120<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>mg/dl; p<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span><<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0,05), y los de colesterol unido a las lipoproteínas de alta densidad inferiores (54 [12]; IC del 95%, 52-57, frente a 64 [18]; IC del 95%, 59-69<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>mg/dl; p<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span><<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>0,05) en las mujeres posmenopáusicas que en las premenopáusicas. Las concentraciones de homocisteína en las posmenopáusicas estaban asociadas negativamente a las de ácido fólico y positivamente a las de creatinina, sin existir asociación con la edad, concentración de vitamina B12 y lipoproteínas.</p> <span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle">Conclusiones</span><p id="spar0020" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">La concentración de homocisteína aumenta en las mujeres posmenopáusicas. Esto puede contribuir, junto con la existencia de hipercolesterolemia, a aumentar su riesgo cardiovascular.</p>" ] "en" => array:1 [ "resumen" => "<span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle">Background</span><p id="spar0025" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">Some studies have found that postmenopausal women have increased plasma homocysteine levels while others do not. The aim of this study was to know if homocysteine levels are increased in Spanish postmenopausal women.</p> <span class="elsevierStyleSectionTitle">Patients and methods</span><p id="spar0030" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall">In 100 postmenopausal women (age: mean [SD] 56 [6] years) homocysteine,creatinine, folic acid, vitamin B12 and lipoproteins were determined. Controls were 50 premenopausal women (age: 29 [6] years), 50 men with similar age to postmenopausal women, and 50 men with similar age to premenopausal women.
