Publicación de los resúmenes de los Congresos de la SECOT en los «proceedings» del «Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery» británico
Por un acuerdo del actual Director de la Revista de la SECOT (Dr. Rodríguez-Merchán) y del Editor Jefe del «Journal» Británico (Mr Frank Horan), los resúmenes de las presentaciones orales de los Congresos SECOT se podrán publicar en los «Proceedings» del JBJS-Británico. Por lo tanto, los autores que hagan presentaciones orales en el próximo Congreso de la SECOT (Tenerife, 1-4 octubre, 2003) y sucesivos, que estén interesados en que sus «Resúmenes» puedan ser publicados en Inglés en el JBJS-Británico, deberán enviarlos en español e inglés (correcto), en papel y en soporte informático (diskette o CD) a la dirección de la SECOT en las fechas señaladas a tal fin (el plazo de recepción señalado en cada Congreso). Aquellos resúmenes que sean de la calidad exigida por los Comités Científicos de los Congresos serán publicados en dichos «Proceedings» del JBJS-Británico. El Director de la Revista y el Comité de Redacción se encargarán de dicha publicación en conexión con el JBJS-Británico.

The third Fellowship exam of the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology is going to take place in the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis in Amsterdam-Holland on the
11th and 12th of October 2003
Requirements
1. Citizenship of European Union (EU) including Norway and Switzerland and New Countries joining the European Union (EU).
2. Certificate of full qualification as an Orthopaedic Surgeon by the National Authorities (EU Orthopaedic Society).
3. Be fluent in English.

Guide to scope of the examination
A. Elective orthopaedics
1. A wide knowledge of orthopaedic disease in both children and adults which includes congenital and genetically determined disorders, metabolic disorders, degenerative diseases and disturbances, and disabilities resulting from disorders of the cen-
tral and peripheral nervous systems. This knowledge should extend from clinical diagnosis through management to rehabilitation.
2. A sound knowledge of the standard operative procedures used and their complications.
3. A knowledge of the standard investigative techniques used in orthopaedics.
4. A knowledge of specialised areas such as the spine, the hand, etc.
B. Trauma
1. A sound knowledge of the care of musculoskeletal trauma from the initial resuscitation through reconstructive surgery to complications and their management, and relevant aspects of rehabilitation. Musculoskeletal trauma includes fractures of limb bone, joint injuries, spinal injuries including neurological damage, pelvic fractures, injuries to muscle, tendon, ligament and nerve, hand injuries, multiple injuries and the principles of shock and resuscitation.
2. An adequate knowledge of visceral, neurosurgical and skin trauma, such as would enable an orthopaedic surgeon to undertake primary diagnosis and treatment of these injuries if specialist expertise were not immediately available.
C. Basic science
1. A knowledge of surgical anatomy relevant to the practice of orthopaedic and trauma surgery.
2. The development of the musculoskeletal system.
3. The physiology and biochemistry of musculoskeletal tissues.
4. The pathology of common conditions including tumours, degenerative and inflammatory arthritis, metabolic bone disease and fracture healing.
5. Bacteriology encountered in orthopaedic practice including operating theatre design and the role of antibiotics.
6. The science of investigative techniques, including the principles of radiography and the effects of radiation on the skeleton, the physical basis of computerised tomography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, the scientific basis of electrophysiological investigations.
7. Biomechanics relevant to the musculoskeletal system. This would include the physical properties of the tissues we deal with (bone, cartilage, and implants for reconstructive surgery and fracture fixation), patterns of gait and limb movement and the effect of forces acting on the skeleton.
8. Working knowledge of Statistics relevant to Orthopaedic practice.
Format of the examination
The format of the Examination will consist of written and oral sections and will contain a component of the Basic Sciences related to Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma.
The sections of the Examination are as follows:
a) A written paper in book form consisting of problem solving tests and 20 MCQ questions - 2 hours.
b) An oral examination consisting of five sessions of 30 minutes. Each oral session will be based on the following subjects (candidates will rotate through the 5 stations):
(i)Adult orthopaedic and trauma surgery-upper limb
(ii)Adult orthopaedic and trauma surgery-lower limb
(iii)Adult orthopaedic and trauma surgery-Spine
(iv)Children's orthopaedic and trauma surgery
(v)Basic sciences related to orthopaedics, including biomechanics, stadistics, audit methodology & outcome based medicine.

Curso de Patología Musculoesquelética (Boston Orthopaedic Course)
Fecha: 10-13 de diciembre de 2003
