Habilidades terapéuticas en terapia de lenguaje. Relación terapeuta-paciente

Los trastornos de lenguaje y la comunicación suelen incidir, con frecuencia, de forma negativa, en múltiples dimensiones de la vida del individuo, desde su autoestima, relaciones sociales, estado de ánimo o su adaptación laboral. El logopeda en su formación adquiere conocimientos específicos sobre el desarrollo y alteraciones del lenguaje y de la comunicación y cómo tratarlos, pero recibe escasa preparación sobre el repertorio de habilidades necesario para manejar situaciones problemáticas de sus clientes y proporcionarles apoyo y orientación. Algunos logopedas pueden tener habilidades terapéuticas de forma intuitiva, pero una formación específica en estas destrezas puede ayudarles a comprender mejor las reacciones de sus pacientes, adultos, niños o sus familias, hacia sus dificultades, cuando está trabajando con ellos. El aprendizaje de habilidades terapéuticas también ayuda al profesional a desarrollar una comprensión mejor de sus propios problemas y del estrés relacionado con su trabajo. Para ser un terapeuta efectivo, el logopeda debe desarrollar cualidades y actitudes determinadas. En la relación terapeuta-paciente el clínico debe establecer una relación empática que le ayude a entender la experiencia subjetiva del paciente. Asimismo, debe comunicar aceptación y respeto hacia el cliente y trasmitirle congruencia. La relación terapéutica es necesaria en diferentes ámbitos clínicos, especialmente con los niños y en los padres de niños con dificultades de lenguaje y de comunicación.

Language and communication disorders often have an influence on all areas of the person’s life, including self esteem, social relationships, emotional state and working environment. Most of the patient’s problems need a therapeutic relationship. The speech- language pathologists learn about normal development and the disorders of language and communication and how to threat them on academic courses, but have little training to respond to the patient’s emotional responses to their difficulties and how the clinician can respond to them, in a therapeutic manner. Some counselling skills may be intuitive, for some clinicians, but speech language therapist will benefit from learning and training counselling skills to use them in the therapeutic relationship. With therapy skills the clinician will develop better understanding of clients, adult, child, or family reactions to their difficulties, with whom they work. Studying therapeutic skills the therapists will also develop a better understanding of his own problems and how to cope with the work related stress. To be an effective helper a clinician needs to develop personal qualities and attitudes. In the client-clinician relationship the professional communicates empathic understanding, he tries to understand and see the patient’s subjective experience. Also he needs to communicate acceptance and respect to the client and to transmit congruence with the other person. Therapeutic skills in the therapeutic relationship are necessary in different settings, also with children and with his parents. The professional characteristics in this therapy type are exposed and developed.
