I would like to thank all of you for the confidence entrusted in me, and to those who came before us for forging the path 120 years ago. This group of enthusiastic entrepreneurial ophthalmologists, decided to get together to study and share their experiences in order to offer better medical attention to their patients.

It is our responsibility and privilege as heirs of the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology (Sociedad Mexicana de Oftalmología, SMO), to continue to uphold this tradition, customs and principles.

There have been many presidents and members that have participated in different board of directors whom we owe the fact that we are now celebrating the 120th anniversary of the SMO, as a stronger and more united group, always attentive to maintaining high levels of excellence among their academics and their members, trying to be at the vanguard of technological and surgical changes and medical advances that have always characterized our field.

As members of the SMO we can proudly say that Mexican ophthalmologists are now present at great national and international forums and we are active participants in all the associations of high specialties. We have no doubt that the next generations will not only uphold the unity of their members, but they will further strengthen their academic excellence and they will support continual medical education programs, adapting to the requirements of the times.

I wish for a long academic life, and for a united SMO.

To our friends and associates I send a fraternal embrace.
