Oropharyngeal and laryngeal manifestations of human monkeypox

He was previously misdiagnosed as having bacterial tonsilitis and was on amoxicillin-clavulanate for 3 days without any improvement. Physical examination showed multiple round ulcers throughout his tonsils and palate (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>), base of tongue and hypopharynx (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0010">Fig. 2</a>), and vocal cords (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0015">Fig. 3</a>). He also had 3 pustules on his chest and forearm. His skin lesions and oropharyngeal swab were PCR positive for monkeypox virus DNA. He was medicated with paracetamol, ibuprofen, and prednisolone, and within a week all his symptoms disappeared. This is the first report in the literature of an oropharynx/laryngeal manifestation of human monkeypox infection. Acta Otorrinolaringológica Española, the official publication of the Spanish Society of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery and the Ibero-American Society of Otorhinolaryngology, is the most important journal in Spanish dedicated to Otorhinolaryngology, which reflects the continuous scientific and technical progress of the specialty. It has become an important tool to be kept up to date. The Journal publishes Original Articles (articles on basic research and clinical investigation), reviews, brief communications, case studies and images, which are subjected to a rigorous peer review process.
