Objective. To learn the patients' opinions of our AMS program by assessing: their degree of postoperative anxiety, the comfort and advantages for the patient and his or her family and, the degree of patient approval and satisfaction.
Methods. Upon hospital discharge, each patient was asked to fill out a questionnaire concerning the above aspects. The present study deals with the first consecutive 398 patients starting in September 1995.
Results. The rate of response to the survey was 66.4%. Of the responding patients, 14.7% would have preferred to remain hospitalized for the first 24 hours. Ear, nose and throat and ophthalmological surgery were associated with the greatest desire for hospitalization. Only 8.4% and 6.4% of those surveyed considered that AMS offers no advantages to the patient and to the family, respectively.
Conclusions.. There is an elevated degree of approval of and satisfaction with AMS. Spending the postoperative period in the home offers comfort and advantages to the patients, although certain surgical procedures are associated with a high degree of anxiety. The patient's opinion should be included in the quality control of health care.
