It does not usually have a significant effect or cause any personal consequences that are bothersome, worrying or nerve-wracking. However, in some people, this behaviour become generalised to the point that it becomes a prominent feature in their personality –known as procrastination– that affects their performance, social relationships and well-being.1

Basically, the term procrastination refers to the deliberate, unnecessary postponement of tasks and activities, which involves negative implications for the individual. Really, this is a phenomenon that is practically universal. It is found in all cultures and have serious consequences in many areas, such as finances, healthcare and education. Approximately one-fifth of adults and half of the student population consider themselves to be chronic, severe procrastinators.2

Procrastination is a behaviour with which teaching staff are very familiar. In effect, postponing tasks and activities, as well as handing in academic papers at the last minute or past the deadline, are commonplace for students at all levels. Unfortunately, they constitute actions that affect their performance and academic results. Procrastinatory behaviour affect all individuals and all areas of life, and are especially negative in the context of health-related decisions.

There is a proven relationship between procrastination and health behaviours. For example, procrastination has been shown to delay diagnosis and treatment of cancer in general, and that, specifically, it is one of the main barriers to early detection of breast, lung and bowel cancers.3 A link has also been observed with a higher incidence of high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases, worse state of dental health, obsessive ideas and problems related to insufficient sleep.4

Other researchers have pointed out that procrastination is especially relevant to the mental health of individuals, in that they act by putting off asking for help and consequently delay treatment. It is calculated that, in global terms, less than half the people with a mental disorder receive treatment. Although this may be due to factors such as users’ lack of knowledge, negative attitudes and financial limitations, some analysts have considered procrastination to be an important additional factor.

It might seem that using the concept of procrastination, applied to health-related human behaviour, is relatively recent. However, back in 1939, Burton T. Simpson (then the director of the New York State Institute for the Study of Malignant Diseases, in Buffalo), published an interesting article in the California Medical Association journal “California and Western Medicine” entitled «Procrastination, the Thief of Life in Cancer», in which he mentioned the issue of cancer treatment at that time and how important early diagnosis and treatment was in ensuring treatment success.5

Evidently, Simpson took the phrase from the work of Charles Dickens, specifically from the passage in “David Copperfield” in which Mr Micawber advises young David: «Never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time». Simpson was applying the statements to how delaying a medical examination could affect one’s very life.

Curiously, although this article was written 80 years ago, its content could be considered totally current. Simpson poses the idea that, although great efforts have been expended in educating the population about the importance of early recognition of the signs and symptoms potentially indicating an incipient cancer in recent years, and that the statistics show that cancers cured are directly proportional to the time interval between symptoms observed and the moment of medical consultation, many people having suspicious symptoms put off consulting their doctor because they are afraid they will be told that they have cancer. In this context, Simpson's maxim makes perfect sense: the delay in diagnosis and treatment –that is, procrastination– becomes a true thief of life.

From the perspective of promoting health, a nurse (as a healthcare professional that, in clinical practice, has the most frequent and personal contact with the users) is in a privileged for incorporating work tools that make it possible to efficiently identify and manage procrastinatory behaviour likely to act as a barrier against the demand for healthcare attention and against the prevention and early detection of specific diseases, delaying diagnosis and worsening the prognosis.
" "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true "NotaPie" => array:2 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "☆" "nota" => "
This study was carried out in the framework of the Doctoral Program of Health and Sports Psychology in the Department of Basic, Evolutionary and Educational Psychology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona).
" ] 1 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "☆☆" "nota" => "
Please cite this article as: Tomás-Sábado J, Brando-Garrido C, Montes-Hidalgo J.
