The Future of Work - How Innovation and Digitalization Re-shape the Workplace

Edited by Sascha Kraus, Alberto Ferraris, Alberto Bertello

Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things have been shaking the foundations of firm strategies, governance structures, organizational culture, and labor relations (Verhoef et al., 2021). The constant technological development has also recently suggested the shift from a Fourth Industrial Revolution (Schwab, 2015) and an Industry 4.0 - in which "smart" factories use robotics to achieve high performance - to the concept of Industry 5.0 - in which technological and social systems work in harmony to provide personalized mass customization of products and services (Bednar & Welch, 2020). Thus, the way we work is going through overwhelming changes that are shaped also by new trends in globalization (Skare & Soriano, 2021).

Against this background, firms are undergoing a process of digital transformation that has been further amplified by the COVID-19 outbreak (Fletcher & Griffiths, 2020; Kraus et al. 2020; Tajvidi & Tajvidi, 2020), paving the way for reflections that cut across several research streams such as information systems, strategy and innovation, knowledge management and corporate sustainability (Bertello et al., 2021; López-Cabarcos et al., 2020; Wendt et al., 2020) as well as across several levels (e.g. intra- and inter-organizational technology-driven collaboration; e.g. Al-Omoush et al., 2021; Bresciani et al., 2021a).
