The deontological obligation of every radiologist, as expressed in the specialty guidelines,1 is to avoid any unnecessary nudity. For this reason, patients who have to bare certain parts of their body are usually given a radiolucent gown to protect their privacy. This, however, is not always done in the daily activity of a public radiology service (with gender bias in some services, where men are not usually given gowns for chest x-rays, although women are; and gowns are not provided for abdominal or hip radiographs, for example).

This practice is not due to an ignorance of our duty to avoid unnecessary nudity, but to cultural norms that lead us to the preconceived notion that men do not feel shame, and accordingly, we act as if they have no need, or right, to protect their privacy.2

An example of this is the scrotal ultrasound, where the subject is told to strip from the waist down, after which he is asked to move his penis from the region to be explored and hold it on his belly with one hand, in a proximal or cranial direction, regardless of whether or not a towel is placed under the scrotum to maximise exposure of the testicles to the scan.3 In these situations, patients are rarely offered something to cover their bodies.

Obviously, to correctly perform an ultrasound scan of the scrotum or testicles they must be exposed, naked, to the technician. However, there is no need for the patient to also show his penis. Nevertheless, this is often what he is, albeit passively, forced to do. This is an example of a failure to comply with the deontological principle and legal obligation to avoid unnecessary exposure of the penis.

Patient privacy and the obligations of health workers in this regard is protected by numerous laws in Spain. Failure to comply with these laws is punishable under the Penal Code.4

There is no reason why patients who must strip from the waist down for a scrotal ultrasound cannot be offered a gown before the procedure, or a small cloth to protect their privacy while they are lying on their back on the ultrasound table. Offering them this option is a way of respecting their privacy, as it would allow them to expose their scrotum while covering their penis as described above.

This approach is fully consistent with the changes occurring during the ongoing process of humanising medicine,5 and enables us to treat our patients while respecting their privacy, as required by current legislation.4
" "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true "NotaPie" => array:1 [ 0 => array:2 [ "etiqueta" => "☆" "nota" => "
Please cite this article as: Ramos-Brieva J.
