The editorial published at that time<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0050">1</a> described the following proposed objectives: to maintain or, if possible, exceed the high level of quality attained by the journal; to increase its visibility and number of citations, thus stimulating the participation of Spanish and Latin American radiologists; and to sustain that concept of a vehicle for expression of radiology in Spanish and open up new horizons to non-Hispanic readers.Below we set out in broad strokes the strategies that have been implemented.In this period, the quality of the content of the journal has been maintained, and renowned European and North American radiologists have been added as authors of distinguished editorials – Yvo Menu, Editor-in-Chief of European Radiology; Eric Stern, Editor-in-Chief of Go Rad; Valerie Jackson, Chair of the American Board of Radiology; Iván Pedrosa, a distinguished researcher from the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, United States; and Thomas Helmberger, an esteemed interventional radiologist, professor and department head in Munich, to mention a few – as have prestigious voices from disciplines apart from but closely related to radiology – Aurelio Ariza, Secretary of the European Society of Pathology and professor of said discipline at the Universitat de Barcelona; Pilar Garrido, Chair of the Comisión Nacional de Oncología (Spanish National Oncology Commission) and the Consejo Nacional de Especialidades en Ciencias de la Salud [Spanish National Council of Specialties in the Health Sciences]; and María Luisa España, Chair of the Comisión Nacional de Radiofísica [Spanish National Radiophysics Commission], Chair of the Sociedad Española de Protección Radiológica [Spanish Association for Radiological Protection] and member of the Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear [Spanish Nuclear Safety Council], among others – who have addressed various subjects of current interest with authority and in-depth knowledge, at once rendering Radiología a truly international journal and achieving new citations with their editorials.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0055">2–9</a>We have been having the full contents of the journal translated into English for two years. Previously, only original articles and updates were translated into English, so this represents a big step towards reaching more readers and broadening awareness of our publication.The journal's mechanism for accreditation of continuing education activities has been improved, as it now depends on the Spanish System of Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (SEAFORMEC), which enables those activities to have a better, more effective assessment: 9 credits versus the prior 2.8.In an attempt to get fully on board with new technologies, Radiología is publicised on social media, members receive a summary of the contents of each issue via e-mail and there is now a space with journal-specific content on the SERAM website open to readers as a forum for opinion and a tool for asking and answering questions.We have also enhanced training for everybody who contributes in various ways to the publication. We aim for this training to be of an increasingly professional nature, through one course for editors and reviewers and another on publications, both of which enjoy high rates of engagement and approval. We have maintained and expanded our policy on editorial grants for residents and young adjunct physicians, allowing us to add enthusiastic and committed new talent to our working group year after year. Their eagerness and desire to work hard are contagious. They are the future of Radiología.Consistent with these dynamics, in order to reach more and more young people and get them involved, residents are being encouraged to make their first publications in the form of “resident articles” and the SERAM Bibliographic Club is being encouraged to coordinate with the journal so that its members may take advantage of the different training options that the journal has to offer.In order to highlight the excellent work of our editors and reviewers, 2020 prizes for the most distinguished reviewers and the article with the largest number of citations have been instituted.Our challenge, and our responsibility, remains sustaining a level of quality befitting the journal, in particular with regard to original articles and updates. These things will allow Radiología to be considered an extraordinarily useful continuing education tool; judging by the ever-increasing number of downloads of our articles (more than to 50,000 in the past year, with 56% of these downloads being of the English version of the articles, up from 30% the year 2018), it already is. With the excellent efforts of our reviewers and editors, original articles and updates also render the journal a valuable tool for improvement for authors, especially less experienced authors, who, thanks to peer review, receive suitable guidance for improving their articles.We also seek to keep all other authors satisfied through fast and efficient feedback, so that editorial decisions are as dynamic as possible, and times to publication are as short as can be.We performed a bibliometric analysis between 2010 and 2019, to be presented at the next conference, in which we analysed numbers, types and origins of articles, as well as numbers of citations and downloads. The conclusions of the analysis provide very interesting information on the journal's history and current situation, which will allow changes to and improvements in the editorial strategy to be proposed.Through this analysis, we determined which article types are most cited and which have most often been downloaded in recent years. This will help bring the contents of the journal into alignment with what our readers most want to know.As regards impact factor, a certain amount of improvement in ranking has been achieved, even though the journal remains in the fourth quartile. This is due to steady, progressive efforts over time, the fruits of years of labour. We are pursuing our aspirations with eagerness and enthusiasm. This will be no easy task.Even though little time has elapsed, the journal may be said to have a bright future. Radiología is consolidating itself as a useful, practical continuing education tool that boasts ever-greater recognition and esteem on an international level.We would like to express our personal thanks to the entire Radiología family, to that extraordinary group of editors and reviewers who selflessly contribute to making the quality and the improvement of the journal an increasingly evident reality.With this, we conclude with Baltasar Gracián's maxim: “Better a quintessence than a hotchpotch” (Manual Oracle: Or, the Art of Prudence).We hope that the 2021 Spanish National Conference, along with the journal, the pinnacle of SERAM's scientific activity, will be a success.We will see you in conference." Founded in 1912, Radiología is the official journal of the Spanish Society of Medical Imaging (Spanish Acronym: SERAM).
Radiología is published bimonthly (6 issues per year) in Spanish and English. All articles undergo a rigorous double-blind review process.
Radiología focuses mainly on original research and review articles, although it also publishes other material.
The journal is indexed in: Emerging Sources Citation Index (Thomson Reuters), Medline, Scopus, and EMBASE/Excerpta Medica
