For many years now we have worked hard to improve the scientific quality of our articles and increase our circulation and citations.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1–4</span></a></p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In 2005 and again in 2010 we applied to ISI/Thomson Reuters for an impact factor, but were turned down. Despite these setbacks, our authors and reviewers have made considerable efforts to improve the quality of our articles, increase our circulation on the Internet and our presence on social networks, and email the table of contents of the journal to our subscribers. In addition, the journal is now entirely bilingual, with articles in both Spanish and English.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0060"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a> This will allow us to reach out to new readers, authors and potential collaborators.</p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">By progressing from publishing just our original articles in English to translating review articles, Spanish Society of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care and Pain Therapy (SEDAR) guidelines, editorials, and now the whole journal, we have increased circulation, readership and authors and, we hope, the number of citations of our articles.</p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">We have made numerous efforts to internationalise the journal by partially decentralising editorial control to include different, highly respected associate editors from different specialist fields, mainly from Spain and the United States, with a command of both English and Spanish. All members of our recently expanded and diversified editorial team are anaesthesiologist of considerable standing, and their valuable input has helped us improve the quality and outlook of our journal, giving it a more international, multilingual scope.</p><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">We are still a leading, highly respected anaesthesiology, critical care, perioperative medicine and chronic and acute pain therapy journal with a large circulation in Latin America. Our position in the region was further strengthened 2 years ago when the only Latin American anaesthesiology journal stopped publishing articles in Spanish, and now focuses exclusively on English and Portuguese. This makes us the only Spanish language anaesthesiology journal in PubMed.</p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Our efforts to stamp out scientific fraud, including plagiarism, our commitment to research ethics and transparency, our requirement that clinical trials are duly registered and studies are conducted in accordance with international standards of patient safety and confidentiality have played a major part in improving our publications.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRefs" href="#bib0065"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6,7</span></a></p><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">The creation of an accredited course for reviewers has also allowed us to bring our knowledge base up to date and standardise the review process, following the example of the most influential journals. We hope that more reviewers will take advantage of free training grants to improve their skills. In recent years we have also invited many new reviewers from Spain and other countries to collaborate with our journal; we have a team of statistics consultants, a native English translator to ensure the stylistic continuity of our English articles, and an internationally renowned editorial system.</p><p id="par0040" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">We need to increase the number of articles in our journal and improve their quality in order to obtain more citations. All the financial investment and personal efforts of the staff of SEDAR have gone towards improving the quality of our journal as an instrument for promoting and disseminating research and advances in our specialist field. We have entered a new era of information technology, we have a rich mother tongue that is highly influential throughout the Americas, and now with a bilingual journal we hope to extend our readership to all parts of the world.</p><p id="par0045" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">On a final note, it only remains to say that we have again submitted our journal for impact factor evaluation.
