Empirical antibiotic treatment was started after obtaining samples for blood and urine for culture. The patient’s haemodynamic status worsened progressively, so he was admitted to the ICU. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) was performed to identify the source of infection, and in the abdominal window a heterogeneous, predominantly hypoechogenic area was observed in liver segment 2, which appeared to be consistent with an abscess (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>, left). A catheter was placed to drain the abscess over a period of 6 h while the patient was in the ICU. <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">Klebsiella pneumoniae</span> was isolated in both blood and drainage fluid. The patient made good progress during his stay in the ICU.
