Sustained decrease in theta and delta waves in relation to extracorporeal circulation (arrow).</p>" ] ] ] "textoCompleto" => "<span class="elsevierStyleSections"><p id="par0005" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Although the BIS index simplifies the assessment of anaesthetic depth, it must be taken into account that the algorithm that calculates it does not always correctly relate to electroencephalographic changes. This discrepancy between the BIS values and the actual hypnotic state can be observed in the spectral density matrix. We have observed discrepancies between BIS values and the spectral density matrix in 2 patients undergoing extracorporeal circulation for cardiac surgery. <a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a> shows that at the beginning (A) and maintenance (B) of extracorporeal circulation, there is a decrease in the activity of the alpha, theta and delta waves, without significant modification of the BIS values (interval 40–60). These discrepancies could be masking an inadequate anaesthetic depth, and increasing the concentration of sevoflurane enabled the recovery of the characteristic pattern of hypnosis with this anaesthetic agent.
