De nuevo, nuestro Congreso

Tras el XIX Congreso de la Sociedad Española de Cirugía Torácica-Cardiovascular (SECTCV), celebrado exitosamente en Málaga, le toca el turno para el XX Congreso a San Sebastián. La declaración de intenciones del presidente del Comité Local Organizador (CLO) en su carta de bienvenida¹ confirma algunos aspectos, entre otros el más importante, el de las dificultades habidas para la selección de las comunicaciones.

Hay dos temas de interés a la hora de referirse al Congreso bianual de la SECTCV. En primer lugar, que es la propia SECTCV la que organiza el congreso, al igual que cualquier otra sociedad científica que se precie, en nuestro ambiente la European Association of Cardio-thoracic Surgery (EACTS), la Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) y la American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS). El papel del CLO es siempre importante, y en este caso, la actuación del de San Sebastián ha sido impecable a la hora de la selección de la sede y del resto del programa social. Por lo tanto, debemos recordar que la SECTCV es quien tiene la potestad de decidir, a través de su Junta Directiva elegida por sufragio universal de los miembros de la SECTCV, sobre el trabajo global de organización. El mensaje subyacente es que la organización del Congreso bianual de la SECTCV no es, ni debe ser, una competición entre congresos.

En segundo lugar, sin temor a ser repetitivos, hay que insistir en que el Congreso bianual de la SECTCV tiene como objetivo principal la elaboración de un programa científico de la máxima seriedad, consistencia y coherencia, ya que se trata de una actividad fundamentalmente científica, organizada por una sociedad científica y para un público mayoritariamente de profesionales del sector, cuya actividad profesional tiene un impacto directo e indirecto significativo en la Sociedad. Siempre deberíamos seguir el ejemplo de los que saben más, y nuestras sociedades de referencia nos marcan la pauta². De ahí la insistencia en que el número de resúmenes enviados para consideración y la calidad de las presentaciones aceptadas son dos de los indicadores más importantes a considerar por la Junta Directiva y por todos los miembros de la SECTCV a quienes representa. De las presentaciones al Congreso de la SECTCV deberían derivarse el núcleo fundamental de los artículos a publicar en nuestra revista Cirugía Cardiovascular. Lamentablemente, esto no sucede con la frecuencia y calidad que debería. Ya se ha insistido con anterioridad con el resultado, amargo, de un goteo escaso e insuficiente de aportaciones relacionadas con la actividad científica más importante de la SECTCV³,⁴. Dos años después del congreso de Málaga, seguimos y seguiremos insistiendo, desde el seno de la SECTCV, en la necesidad de contribuir al desarrollo de un órgano de expresión fundamental, si bien existe en ocasiones la impresión de predicar en el desierto, más grave aún en nuestro propio desierto, lo que nos hace plantearnos si la transición de desierto a erial, hacia el objetivo de un vergel científico, sea viable en el futuro⁵.

El programa científico del XX Congreso de la SECTCV es, no obstante, muy atractivo, y reabre la puerta a la esperanza de que los miembros de la misma, en especial los más jóvenes, incrementen su contribución a una Sociedad con retos importantes de futuro.

Once more, our Congress

Following the XIX Congreso de la Sociedad Española de Cirugía Torácica-Cardiovascular (SECTCV), successfully held in Málaga, it is now the time of the XX Congress in San Sebastián. The comments by the president of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in his welcome letter¹ confirms some issues, among others the most important of the difficulties at the time to select the abstracts.

There are two important aspects to discuss when referring to the biennial Congress of the SECTCV. First, the SECTCV itself does organize the congress, like any other scientific society, in our environment the European Association of Cardio-thoracic Surgery (EACTS), the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS). The role of the LOC is always important and in this case, that of the San Sebastián Congress has been impeccable at the time to select the venue and the remaining of the Social Programme. We have to remind that the SECTCV has the authority to decide, through its Council elected by the SECTCV members, on the global organization activities. The underlying message is that the organization of the biennial Congress of the SECTCV it is not and should not be, a competition among congresses.

Second and without hesitation to be repetitive, we must insist that the biennial Congress of the SECTCV has as a main goal, to elaborate a highly serious and consistent scientific programme as it is a scientific activity, organized by a scientific society for an overwhelming professional public whose professional activity has a direct and indirect impact on the Society as a whole. We should always follow the example given to us by those who know more than us and our related societies give us the pace². From here to insist that the number of submissions and the quality of the accepted abstracts are two of the main indicators to be considered by the council and by all the members of the SECTCV. From the presented abstracts the hard core of the papers to be published in our journal Cirugía Cardiovascular should arise. Unfortunately, this does not happen at the desired frequency and with the expected quality. It has been said before with the bitter result of a scanty and insufficient dripping of submissions related with the activities of the most important academic activity of our SECTCV³,⁴. Two years after the Málaga Congress, we continue to insist from within the SECTCV on the need to contribute to the development of our official organ; notwithstanding there are some feelings of preaching in the desert, more seriously our own desert, with the doubt that the path from a desert to a green scientific garden through a transitional wasteland will be viable in the future⁵.

The scientific programme of the XX Congress of the SECTCV is very attractive and reopens the door to the hope that its members, especially the younger, will increase its contribution to a Society facing important challenges in the future.
