Fracturas de esternón asociadas a fractura vertebral

Introducción. En los traumatismos del torso es muy importante diagnosticar las lesiones asociadas.
Pacientes y Métodos. Se estudian retrospectivamente 18.982 historias clínicas de enfermos ingresados en los Servicios de Cirugía General y Traumatología del Complejo Hospitalario de Ciudad Real, durante los años 1990 y 1996, ambos inclusive. Fueron diagnosticadas 38 fracturas de esternón, y se valoró su asociación con fracturas vertebrales.
Resultados. Se determinó la incidencia de la asociación de fractura de esternón y fractura vertebral, que fue del 42,4%, así como la incidencia de fracturas vertebrales que pasaron desapercibidas, que fue el 17% de las fracturas de esternón.
Conclusiones. Ante estos hallazgos se concluye que ante toda fractura de esternón debe hacerse un estudio radiográfico de la columna vertebral.

Introduction. In the thorac trauma it is very important the diagnosis of associated lessions.
Patients and methods. A retrospective study was carried out to examine the case histories of 18,982 patients who had been treated in the General Surgery and Orthopedics Services of the Hospital Complex of Ciudad Real in Spain from the beginning of 1990 to the end of 1996. Thirty-eight sternal fractures were diagnosed and their association with vertebral fractures was assessed.
Results. The incidence of the association between sternal and vertebral fractures was 42.4%. In 17% of cases of sternal fracture, there were associated vertebral fractures that went undetected.
Conclusions.. These findings suggest that a radiographic study of the spine should be carried out in all cases of fractured sternum.
