Resumen
El objetivo de este trabajo es hacer una revisión del estado actual de la mastectomía como medida terapéutica quirúrgica del cáncer de mama. Se puede observar cómo todavía esta técnica quirúrgica, fundamentalmente la modalidad de mastectomía radical modificada, sigue vigente en una serie de pacientes en estadios I y II de la enfermedad, bien como indicación médica, bien como preferencia de la propia paciente tras una adecuada información, o bien por el medio en el que nos encontramos. Igualmente hacemos una revisión de los distintos tipos de mastectomía y sus indicaciones, del estado actual de la mastectomía profiláctica sola o asociada a reconstrucción mamaria, la mastectomía en los carcinomas ductal y lobulillar in situ, las complicaciones de la mastectomía, y la importancia de la participación de la paciente en la elección de la técnica quirúrgica más adecuada, de cara a disminuir las repercusiones psicológicas que derivan de una mastectomía.

The objective of this report is to review the present status of mastectomy in the surgical treatment of breast cancer. We observed that this surgical technique, particularly modified radical mastectomy, continues to be performed in patients with stage I or II disease, either based on the physician’s criteria, on the patient’s own preference after being properly informed or on the patient population upon which we focused. We also review the different types of mastectomy and their indications, the present state of prophylactic mastectomy, alone or in combination with breast reconstruction, the role of mastectomy in ductal carcinoma in situ and in lobular carcinoma in situ, the complications associated with mastectomy and the importance of the participation of the patient in the choice of the most suitable surgical technique in the attempt to reduce the psychological impact of mastectomy.
