Minimal access extracervical approaches to thyroid surgery are widely used in Asia. Their main advantage is to avoid the ever-visible cervical scar. In our unit we incorporated the bilateral axillary-areolar approach (BA-BA) in 2017. It is a reproducible and highly versatile technique that makes it possible to perform uni- or bilateral thyroidectomies in the same operation, laterocervical lymphadenectomies or totalisation surgeries, as in the case presented.
A left totalisation thyroidectomy is shown following the finding of a papillary cancer in the right thyroidectomy previously performed for a suspicious nodule. The incisions used were the same in both procedures. Simultaneously, comparative images of a left hemithyroidectomy in first intervention are shown (original video available in the Videoatlas of the website of the Spanish Association of Surgeons [AEC for its initials in Spanish]).
