Abstract

In the attempt to understand an organizations’ survival and growth, legitimacy plays a key role. Organizations that show more credibility, convenience and adjustment to social norms, values and beliefs are more predictable, trustworthy and balanced. While institutional theory identifies legitimacy as a critical success factor that all organizations must consider, there is little empirical research in this field, essentially because of the hurdle of quantifying the concept of legitimacy. In this study we take a step forward in the effort of establishing a methodology for measuring organizational legitimacy. We have studied Spanish Mutual Guarantee Societies. We have evaluated their legitimacy and ranked them according to his criterion. Furthermore, we have analyzed the relative importance of the different aspects of legitimacy in MGS and established a legitimacy profile for the sector.

En la búsqueda por comprender la supervivencia y el crecimiento de las organizaciones, la legitimidad juega un papel clave. Las organizaciones que demuestran más credibilidad, conveniencia y adecuación con los valores, normas y creencias de la sociedad son más predecibles, fiables y equilibradas. Aunque la teoría institucional identifica la legitimidad como un factor crítico de éxito a tener en cuenta por todas las organizaciones, son escasas las investigaciones empíricas en este campo, fundamentalmente por el problema que conlleva cuantificar el concepto de legitimidad. Con esta investigación pretendemos dar un paso más en el esfuerzo por establecer una metodología para medir la legitimidad organizativa. La investigación se ha realizado sobre la población de las Sociedades de Garantía Recíproca (SGR) españolas. Se ha desarrollado una evaluación sobre su grado de legitimidad, estableciendo una clasificación de las mismas. Asimismo, se ha analizado la importancia relativa de las dimensiones que forman la legitimidad en las SGR y establecido el perfil de legitimidad del sector.
