Scientific medical journals date back more than two and a half centuries.1 One of the most important medical journals (TheNew England Journal of Medicine) celebrated 200 years last year.2 Regardless of time, important procedures remain current, such as peer-reviews, and the fact that we still adhere to international guidelines and to the requirements particular to each journal.

We have decided to make certain modifications to the Mexican Journal of Ophthalmology (Revista Mexicana de Oftalmología, Rev Mex Oftalmol, RMO), the Journal of the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology (Sociedad Mexicana de Oftalmología). This year, the association is celebrating 120 years since its foundation.

You probably have noticed that a new format has been created, as well as new images for the cover page; such images will be replaced in each volume.

The RMO will continue to maintain the same standards according to the guidelines established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors3 (ICMJE, http://www.icmje.org). The RMO appears on the list of the ICMJE journals since February this year. Through a direct website (http:// ees.elsevier.com/mexoftalmo), the scientific publishing company Elsevier has improved its online publishing platform for article submission through the same system (Elsevier Editorial System, EES) used by very prestigious journals such as The Lancet, Cell, and The American Journal of Cardiology, as well as journals of particular interest to us such as Ophthalmology,4 American Journal of Ophthalmology and Survey of Ophthalmology. In the next few years, the EES system will migrate to a new platform (Next-EES or EVISE), which will allow great versatility and better flow in the reception, revision and viewing of manuscripts.

Although indexation to PubMed/MEDLINE5 has become the gold standard for trustworthy information, we are very pleased to announce that the RMO is now associated with SCOPUS, SciVerse and ScienceDirect; moreover, it has now been assigned a revision date to be admitted to PubMed/ MEDLINE by 2016 at the latest. We are working specifically to expedite this process in order to get an earlier date

We want to take this opportunity to thank the Editorial Committee, the Editorial Assistants, and each one of the Reviewers for their contributions. Each year, a list of all the reviewers with our acknowledgements for their contributions shall be included in the final volume, just as is done by other scientific journals.6 Applications for new members to our Review Panel are welcome. This can be done online or by directly contacting revistamexofta@smo.org.mx.

Finally, we want to congratulate and recognize each of the authors who have participated in the RMO since its inception. Although it sounds contradictory, the job of the Editors is to improve the work of the authors, for the benefit of those who are most important: our readers. We are very open to new suggestions, and if we ever request any author to modify a table or substitute an image, to broaden the methodology section or to rewrite a conclusion or discussion, please be aware that it is always for the enrichment of knowledge and in the pursuit of excellence.7 The final result is to try to give the reader an improved issue each time, including the best scientific content and the best possible collaboration from each author.
