A 3F 8cm x1mm 20G seldicath (Prodimed, France) radial catheter was inserted for monitoring using the palpation technique and then flushed with heparin. Cannulation was only successful after multiple attempts. Three days later, the patient has developed hand ischaemia (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>). The catheter was removed and anticoagulation administrated. Radial artery cannulation is considered a safe procedure. However, rare ischaemic complications may occur. The Allen test may be useful in preventing complications, but it has low sensibility, even when combined with pulse oximetry, and daily examination of the hand is still the key to avoiding such complications. Catheters should be removed at the onset of signs. This is a monthly journal (10 issues) that publishes scientific articles of all areas within its specialty: clinical anesthesia, resuscitation-intensive medicine and critical care, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain, urgent care and emergencies and studies on basic science and related fields.
